I don’t understand how this University is a D1 school. Getting in is a joke. My GPA is atrocious and my SAT’s were mediocre, and I still managed to get in. Is this school serious? This school is definitely not one of the best in New York. Not even in New York City! I actually laughed when I read some posts awhile ago, people mentioning St. John’s in the same sentence as NYU, Columbia, Fordham, etc … you’ve got to be kidding me. This school will ACCEPT anyone. I was shocked when I found out that I actually got in.

Big (L)east academics…

Their basketball team could dominate the other three

St. John’s lost to Cornell last night on its “home court” (Madison Sq. Garden).

Division status and selectivity are not related. This is patently obvious.

For someone with a poor academic record, you’re entirely too ungrateful about an acceptance.

what fool would group all these schools together as if they are all in the same tier…

The only academic standard that a D1 school has to uphold is the NCAA’s abysmally low sliding-scale standard (i.e. 1010 on CR+M with a 2.0 GPA). Heck, St. John’s isn’t anything to laugh at when you consider the lack of academic focus at some other D1s. It makes me think of FSU; even though it’s not a bad school its focus on the athlete-student is shameful.

And OP, if you’re insulting a school that accepted you because it accepted you, you’re going to hate the next four years of your life.

A school’s NCAA division is just a function of the amount of resources it’s willing to sink into its athletic program. When you think of it, it’s easier for a school with fewer academic restrictions to compete in D1 than a school with high academic standards.

OP, were you thinking of U.S.News’ “first tier” instead of the NCAA’s “Division 1”?

St. John’s was crap in the seventies, crap in the eighties, crap in the nineties, crap in the oughts, and moving into the tens remains CRAP!!!

^ “Oughts” - I’ve heard that term thrown around here and there. Is that now the unofficial way to colloquially say “2000s”?
