How is the Indian Currciculum viewed?

@gary7/blue/harvard: Thank you, guys =D I know about HYP and MIT being need blind. I really have my heart set on Princeton/Stanford though.
@gary7: Co-incidentally, my nickname is gary, and about the olympiad well :
NCO 3 * Whiz Kid Award (Gold Medal)[ the number being number of years consecutively]
NSO Top Rank AIR- 84
(All ways get a certificate of achievement)
ASSET 4 * Outstanding Performance ( awarded for being in 95 and above percentile in each subject

But these are really not the ones I’m passionate about. The ones i am are:
Model UN - done it for 2 years already, will do ti for 4, already am the MUN secratary at my school which is the highest post you can get in teh model UN CLub
Quiz- part of the team, we have a badass rep on the Delhi Quiz Scene
Member Student Council ( will be a member for the enxt two years , hopefully getting a vice headboy/headboy/president post in that duration.
Also my school is pretty competitive. Last year we had a guy who got into Harvard, Yale , Princeton and is attending at harvard. But then of course, he didnt need fin-aid.

I wanted to ask… do these schools actually give out good financial aid packages for internationals (specifically indians)

Your EC’s will be far more important that the difference b/w rank 1 and rank 5.

Advice - Work on your essays.
Your ec’s will matter but not unless they’re outsanding. Further, it depends more on the college. For eg. MIT, Stanford, Princeton will pay attn. to science/math olympiads and stuff while colleges like Yale, Penn, Columbia, Brown, LAC’s will take you if you have amazing essays, EC’s not withstanding. [This is based on what I’ve seen around me…]

What are the chances of financial aid from Stanford. I remember one of my seniors, won an international level comp from NASA and got a full ride. But this was years back, 2005/2006. So whats the scene now?

If you’re admitted to any of the ivies/MIT/Amherst/UChicago/Reed/Williams and a few other top colleges, you’ll get as much aid as you need. Stanford sucks with aid sometimes even if they admit you from what I heard(not verrrry sure about Stan). But yes, admission itself is super stingy for Stanford, in comparison to other need-awares.

And yes, having 2 exceptional and 3 decent ECs is better than 5 very good regular ones. Since you’re in 10th(I think I read that somewhere) you still have time to pile up loads of achievements. Make sure you do all the Govt. stuff- KVPY, govt. science olympiads etc. They’re always respected much more than NSTSE/NCO/NCO/Eduheal/Sofworld. Just do your best, apply to the colleges you think suit you irrespective of their ranks and wait for the results :)

You’ve got amazing statistics, keep this up and you might secure a seat in a HYPSM!

sam, don’t mind my using your thread to ask this, but will the adcoms understand that in the 11th grade teachers are free to mark as they wish. I mean in the 11th grade teachers around here give horrible marks to pressurize students and the curriculum also gets much harder, so adcoms won’t see it very negatively, right?

My % got a 13.5% decrease from the boards in the 11th grade.

Yes, adcoms from universities that get a lot of applicants from India do understand the fact that tenth boards are national exams and grade 11 and 12 are not. Hence, more importance is given to your rank in 11 and 12 grades than your marks. To cut it short, everything is viewed in context.

Good to know that.

That is irrelevant. All 3 schools are need-blind.

@debar- Thats good! My 11th %age dropped by 30. Lol.

And mine by 40 something.

I’ve got good company.

Hahaha!

@Blue_Box: Could you PM me your grades and SAT scores? Please? I’m curious to know. Thanks :)

Rank+competitiveness of school.
Like a 5th at mine, or a good DPS might be better than 2nd at a lot of places.

@gary: Well, I attend a very competitive school in New Delhi. Its Amity International , Saket.
SO yea… its as good as a DPS, RKP? I mean I attended there and then transferred.

Good, then just concentrate on rank. Being from an intl’ school will definitely help.
P.S. Amity is such a fake brand lol, no offense!

No way.

Its not a fake brand, but it IS more a brand than a set of institutions. They promote their institutions through advertisements way too much. If their faculty and teaching and all was strong, they wouldn’t need those advertisements.
You see University of Alabama advertising on this site. You don’t see Harvard advertising here. You see what I mean?

There’s a LOT more to Amity than the advertising thing. PM me your email if you want the proofs and details of irregularities.

Lovely Professional University
IIPM
Amity.
All in the same boat…

Which high school you go to in india really doesnt matter. They all follow the same curriculum… And if the teacher aint good then join tuitions… Thats how the system works…

I’m not talking about international schools here…

Only icse/cbse/isc/state boards…
