Stanford is my goal school since they have a very tight knit entrepreneurship community. I’m looking at other schools with a similar vibe (note that I’m an international from AUS). Can anyone recommend some schools to me? And how is it at NYU?
I asked my friend who currently attends Stern, the business school at NYU and she said there’s only a small population of people who are looking at creating their own businesses at NYU – at least in the business school. Most are just focused on finance, not entrepreneurship.
I don’t know if this is exactly what you’re looking for but there are people here who create/start interesting projects. For example, a kid on my floor created a free app that almost everyone has the tells you what dining halls are open at that moment and lets you see their menus, and another student here created a website where you can “donate” meal swipes to people in need and has met with people from colleges and universities in NYC to work on university meal plans.
Stern changed their curriculum the year after I graduated (2012) to be focused more on not just entrepreneurship, but also more flexibility and pursuit of interests (particularly outside of finance which they are known for). During my junior and senior years there was definitely an increase in the number of students interested in consulting, marketing, and working in environments outside of large companies. The majority of students still are focused on finance based on the networking and alumni events I’ve gone to but they do hold regular startup pitch competitions particularly at the graduate school which sometimes trickles down to undergrad programs.
Most of the more entrepreneurial classmates I had usually major or minored in EMT (Entertainment Media & Tech) related fields, management, or comp sci along with their finance majors. Being in NYC there is a pretty active community around entrepreneurship (NY Tech Meetups are also hosted at NYU’s Skirball Center), you can regularly find free meetup events through companies like AlleyNYC, WeWork, Tech Crunch, etc. NYU Stern in itself still has a lot of room for growth in offering a robust entrepreneurship curriculum, but the access to startups, network, and internship opportunities definitely help.
