How is this schedule?

HIST-076 AFRICA SINCE 1800 MWF - 12:00PM-01:00PM 1 credit
HIST-206-404 CHINESE IDENTITIES R - 01:30PM-04:30PM 1 credit
RUSS-001-001 ELEMENTARY RUSSIAN I MTWRF - 10:00AM-11:00AM 1 credit
TURK-021-680 ELEM TURKISH I MW - 03:30PM-05:30PM 1 credit

I’m going to be a junior history major. The reason I am taking Russian and Turkish is because I would like to study Central Asian history in grad school, and all the Central Asian (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Chinese Xinjiang province, etc.) countries speak one Turkic language or another, while Russian is the lingua franca of the region. I am also a transfer student, and the reason why I transferred was mainly so I would be able to take these less commonly taught language courses.

The history major here requires 12 courses, and I am expecting all 7 of the courses I have taken at my old school to transfer over (leaving me with only 5-6 courses left to complete the major).

The max # of credits a semester is 4.5. I am trying to petition my advisor to let me take one more history course, so that I will be able to essentially finish up my major by the end of junior year and spend all of senior year concentrating on writing my history thesis. I am also anticipating club rugby/varsity football (depends if I successfully walk-on or not) practices in the evenings.

So what do you guys think? Reasonable or not? Would grad schools think it is weird to be taking all these intro level language courses so late in the game?

I think it makes perfect sense. I’m going to be a junior history major this year also, and I’ll be taking one language at the intermediate level, and one at the beginning level (Arabic and French respectively). However, I’ve taken both before, so I don’t foresee it being terribly difficult–I could see starting both Russian and Turkish at the same time as being very challenging, in addition to a seminar (which I presume the Chinese Identities course is). However, it doesn’t appear that you’ll actually be in class that much, maybe it would be useful to add another history course.
