How late is too late to decide to take a gap year?

Recently, I have realized that I really would like to take a gap year before starting college. I am set to start at the University of Miami (FL) this August, but I would really rather take a year off beforehand. I know that if I had decided on taking a gap year earlier, it would have been very easy to simply defer and start the following year, but I don’t know if there is some sort of deadline for that. Does anyone know if I will have a problem deferring this late in the game?

Why are you asking us? At this point you would have an adviser, as an equivalent, assigned to you. If not, certainly you can ask the director of admissions at the University of Miami.

Gap year rules, including whether a gap year is allowed, vary widely from college to college.

It’s almost July. Ask your college immediately.

I have. I emailed the admissions office today, but since its Saturday nobody’s in the office. I was just hoping to get some input before Monday. No need to be snarky.

But fogcity is right; we’d have no way of knowing. Call Admissions first thing Monday morning. Don’t wait for a reply to your email.

What are you thinking of doing during your gap year?

I’m planning on spending a few months in Thailand becoming a scuba instructor

Is your family supportive of your gap year plans?

Very much so
