I got a letter in the mail from the College of Engineering saying that I was “very likely to be admitted to Cornell.” I’ve read some posts on the forum and found that some other CCers received a different letter stating acceptance for sure, and I’ve been confused about what my “very likely” means. So how likely is my chance? Could I expect an acceptance by the end of March? Thanks!

A likely letter is a 100% guarantee of an acceptance.

The reason for the awkward “very likely” wording is that the Ivy League is bound by contract to not release any “absolute decisions” until the common notification date, March 31st. The likely letters are an easy way for Ivy Leagues to notify strong minority, athletic, and exceptionally gifted applicants of their impending acceptance while the rest of the Universities turn a blind eye.

Congrats on your acceptance.

Oh, yeah, don’t get bad grades…

Thanks so much! That’s what I was hoping for, and now I feel much assured.

lol mine was very blunt and didn’t cut the crap. It simply said “You will be offered admission March 31.”

It depends on which college you applied to. I applied to CAS and got the same thing as disasterpiece02 but for engineering I think they all just say very likely. So as long as you keep your grades up you’ll be fine!

Mine was engineering…

My daughter’s was for engineering and said “very likely.”

Mine said that I will be offered admission. To Engineering.

Umm…did you guys who got the “will be offered admission” letter get the invitation to Women in Engineering or something else? Maybe that made a difference?

not all “wills” got the women in engineering

So some of them did get women in engineering? Because that’s what I got. I thought I saw something about URMs having separate letters and I thought that might have been where the difference came from, but I don’t know.
I am really glad I got the likely letter either way though. Hopefully it means what chendrix said it means. :)

Good job and welcome to Cornell! I was estatic when I found out on ED decision release day. Truly the best day of my life. =) I can’t wait until August!

mine said “will be admitted”, not for engineering. The next day I got an invite to the diversity housing weekend.

anyone get a likely letter from CAS who is not URM?

do they offer likely letters to transfers?

doubt it. 10char
