So as of this week I have lost FIFTY pounds in the last 6 months. Obviously alot of my old clothes either look terrible on me or are just literally falling off. I’ve been buying new along the way focusing on big sales. But what about the ones that no longer fit? I definitely feel like I’ve made a lifestyle change and don’t plan to regain. But is it foolish to just get rid of all the old clothes now? I’ve got another 6 pounds to lose but have no doubt I’ll get there. Thoughts?
Wow, congratulations! I guess I would keep anything that has sentimental value (“sparks joy”, lol), or might have costume potential or one of my kid’s might want. But 50 pounds is a lot, so you will likely not be rewearing those clothes. Keep a few choice pieces and then have fun shopping for new things.
Congrats on the weight loss!
About 15 years ago I lost 80 pounds. I’ve managed to keep 50 off long term. I did get rid of all my really big clothes but hung on to the pieces I loved that were one size up. I did have a number of items altered as well.
^^^ I was going to also suggest if saving anything go one size up - and limit the # of those you save.
“So long!” to the rest - congrats!
I think I would slowly phase them out. Look at your closet and there are probably lots of things you wouldn’t wear no matter what size they were. I bet you have a new opinion of what looks good on you now and maybe want to dress a little younger! Congratulations for such a huge accomplishment. Buying things on sale is a great way to phase into the new you! Love this problem!
IMO it has nothing to do with the clothes, but IMO you shouldn't make any rash moves at 6 months in while still on a weight loss regime. Losing weight is terribly easy, keeping it off is where the work is. Make that part of your 2 yr contract or something that suits you as part of the real behavioral adjustment that this really is.
I had a friend who gained a lot of weight and then lost it. She figured out that her old clothes that she had hung on to were terribly out of style.
Get rid of those clothes that don’t fit! Incentive to stay where you are.
And congratulations! <:-P
I keep one pair of nice black dress pants that are one size up. Then, I have 2 pairs of jeans that are very loose – barely one size up. I also have a pair of very baggy rafting shorts that are comfortable to garden in.
That’s it. Everything else I have fits.
I vote to get rid of the clothes that don’t fit, unless it’s something you really, really love and/or want altered.
There are many other people who would enjoy your too-big clothes and who would fit them.
Get rid of the clothes that you only wore because your “other” old clothes were too tight. Keep any clothes that you like, whatever the size, because you knows what the future will bring.
I have my good normal weight with a range, then I have my obsessive, as much as 10 pounds lower weight that I hit now and again; oh, and I have my fatter weight, up to 10 pounds higher, when I am injured and cannot exercise or just gain a few pounds.
I marked my pants hangers with colored tape, black for being bummed out on the fat pants, happy pink on the skinny pants. This allows me to keep a few pairs of pants for each extreme, pants that are non stretch, traditional business attire. Honestly, some of them are easily way to old to keep, but I figure no one else would wear them either and it allows me a good gauge of my size without succumbing to the lies of vanity sizing. Since my youngest was born, that is pretty much my size range, that +/- 10# range that is not forgiven by non-stretch clothes. I’ve probably hit the low low 3-4 times and the same with the high high, but it’s sure nice to have what I consider a transitional option when I feel fat or slim.
“Losing weight is terribly easy”…lol!
Anyway, good for you! Lots of great tips here.
Yo-yo dieter here - every time I lose weight - I SWEAR I will not regain it and donate my too large clothes, which I later regret when I have regained weight and have nothing to wear! I am down about 10 lbs as of today and my fat jeans are quite roomy. I plan to start a donate pile as needed, but might hold off a few months on the actual donation. History has proved me wrong as far as donating the larger clothes helping me to keep the weight off.
Congrats on your weight loss. And, btw, weight loss is NOT easy. I recently lost 43 lbs and would like to lose a bit more. As my clothes (mostly pants) became too big I purged them from my closet. I was on the fence whether I should bag them up and put them in the attic (just in case I might need them again) or give them away. Well, my daughter came home for the weekend and took them to sell at a local Buffalo Exchange store and I made a bit of money. The rest she took back to her home with her and is trying to sell on Poshmark. So we’ll see what happens. So something along these lines might be an option for you.
My H says it’s more positive to just rid yourself of the old clothes. Maybe keep a few items that remind you of where you were and where you are now.
Once again, congratulations on your weight loss and continued success!
Save one ugliest, the most giant piece and keep it as a reminder to never go back. Purge the rest.
The concept of keeping more than one size wardrobe in my closet is foreign to me. I have never had clothes that are for one weight and other clothes for another weight. That’s not to say that I haven’t ever had weight differences - but if my clothes get too tight - then a change in my food intake commences! Maybe that keeps the weight fluctuation to a minimum.
I agree - someone THAT size will appreciate finding your clothes at a resale shop.
It might be hard for someone who does not struggle with their weight to understand a wardrobe with multiple sizes. I can tell you it is not fun and is expensive. In my adult life, I have ranged from a size 8 to a size 16. I have kept some of the smaller sized pieces that are classic and timeless in hope that I will wear them again someday.
I have smaller sized clothes with the tags still attached. I lose weight, set out on a reward shopping spree and regain weight before I have a chance to even wear the new clothes! It has been a lifelong struggle.
I am a stress eater, and 2018 was certainly stressful. So being down 10 lbs mid-January feels good, but 2-3 weeks of effort is but a drop in the bucket.
For the OP, you have to weigh (no pun intended) the triumphant feeling of getting rid of all the overly large clothes with the harsh reality that most people who lose weight gain it back. That’s why I recommend packing them away for a bit, rather than donating right away.
I’ve had a lifelong struggle with weight and have three sizes in my closet. I lost around 30 pounds last year, but have decided to pack away the larger sizes for a year. I understand the comment that losing is “easy” - well not at all easy, but far easier to me than maintenance has ever been. I vote for keeping your favorite larger items, maybe two of each type, just in case. Donate the rest.
Congratulations! Get rid of them!! To do anything else is to not believe in yourself.
They are taking up room in your closet and drawers and making it hard to see what you have that fits.
Losing weight makes cleaning out your closet so easy - why waste that??
You have either gone through weight fluctuations or you haven’t. If you haven’t, then why are you giving advice? Does it make you feel good to talk down to us “losers”? Anyone who keeps multiple sizes of clothes is doing so either for economic reasons, from experience or both.
