Getting rid of old clothes is like making a New Years resolution, except more costly.

@busyparent. “I have to be like mad eye Moody- constantly vigilant” I love this! So true. I am losing weight now, slowly, very careful eating, moderate exercise, and yes, constantly vigilant. I have done this enough times to know how easy it is to slip back into old habits for a few days, regain a few pounds, become completely discouraged and give up.
It’s helping that DH is also watching what he eats, the food at home is healthy and we have cut back on eating out.
I do have a closet full of size 8 and 10 clothes, some with tags, not giving away. I think these are items I would wear, I at least want to be able to have the option.
A few years back, after I’d lost almost 50 pounds, I was going on a cruise with my mom. In my closet, I still had a lovely floor length black jersey gown from the 1980’s that had been bought for DH’s office holiday parties. It hadn’t fit since before DS was born, but now it did. I was delighted to take it on the cruise - it was essentially a timeless vintage style.
I just went through all the pairs of pants I’d put away after I got too big for them. 1/4 went to Goodwill, 1/2 went into storage and 1/4 are now in my closet. There was not a single pair I couldn’t fit into.
My plan is still to hold on to everything until I can feel sure I won’t regain the weight, but for now it feels good.
“Can we do a thread about what happens (as I have to believe) to most of us …. keeping old clothes that are TOO SMALL!” - It’s not a horrible idea. When I lost weight, it was a delight to fit back into old pants again. That meant I could splurge on a few really nice new pieces (including a pair of black NYJD jeans).
^I agree. It was nice not to have to buy an entirely new wardrobe. I still have [until recently too small] jeans, dresses and other clothes that I bought because they were flattering to my body type. As I’ve lost weight it was nice to have them. Had I given them away I would have had to spend a lot of time, effort, and money buying new things. The extra wide boyfriend khakis and super low-cut bellbottoms are not making the cut but most of my pants are still enough in style to be worth wearing.
