How long does it take to get over being homesick?

Well, I was a transfer student and spent my first three years at a community college. I lived at home with my parents during this time and now I’ve been here on my own in a quiet apartment for the last month or so since school started. I thought I was doing alright, but I just really miss everyone. They came to visit Friday and I feel pretty lonely.

It’s been hard making friends as a transfer student. I haven’t had anyone talk to me really besides the one friend I had that transferred with me to my school. We were sort of friends last year, but I have a feeling we just hang out with each other because we only know each other and no one else.

I’ve joined a few clubs but they only meet every two weeks or even longer than that after department seminars. Don’t get me wrong, I have plenty of work to do. I guess it doesn’t help that my girlfriend lives across the country either. I just feel terribly lonely and regret not starting out in the first place at a four year so I could’ve made friends off the bat. Everyone seems like they know each other. If my friend isn’t on campus that day I’m pretty much alone.

Do you think that after the first semester this will wear off? This feeling of loneliness?

While it has been many years, I was once in your exact situation. Luckily for you, the internet and skype are wonderful ways to stay connected to friends and family who are not close. In my day, I just had the occasional letter and phone call. But the feelings of loneliness can be tough to get through on a day to day basis. It will wear off over time, especially if you get involved in more clubs/activities that meet more often. Try to hang out in public areas on campus more often, instead of in your apt. Maybe join a religious group(or an atheist group). These groups often plan a lot of activities, and they are good ways to meet lots of like-minded students.
Also, try to have no regrets about where you started off your college years. You saved a lot of money going to cc first, and that is a good thing in today’s economy.
Good luck and be patient-it will get easier!

Don’t regret anything. I’m actually in a situation, but I’m a college freshman, 10 hours from home, and right now I really wish I had chosen somewhere closer, but I think that it takes time. And you being a transfer student is going to make it hard to find a group, but I think that it takes some good talking to people, starting with casual conversations, and then you get to know if you like to hang around them after some time. Maybe some people in your class, like a study group at first or something, but try to find ways to interact with others. And think on the positive side, you only have one more year to go and you’re done!

a few months

For me, it took about a month and going home to visit once or twice. The first semester was the hardest and I was emotional and missed my mommy but it gets better. Now I hardly miss da 'rents.
