There is no “cap”, but it has to fit in the space they provide (1 page) in a reasonable size font (at least 10), and 900 words is way too long.

but 900 words is only a page and a half! (typed single space 12 size font)

edit : it fits in 1 page w/ title in size 10 font

900 words is WAY too long. Cut it down to at least 700 words, for the sake of the quality of the essay. I found that in editing down my essays they got MUCH better. It’s really hard, but the effort pays off.

okay cool… so for the essays where they ask for 250-500 words (like common app , MIT etc…) you should keep it under 600 right?

For the first 3 short essays, mine were about 250 words and were just under the character limit.

My long essay was about 900 words and fit perfectly.

and i got accepted. so don’t worry about it being to long as long as its not redundant or boring.
