How long will it take to know IF I will achieve financial aid

So long story short i did one year of college after high school and it wasnt good. I did achieve some creidts but not all the ones i shouldve. I was depressed and going through a medical issue. So now Im ready to go back in the fall. Its been 4 years since then. Its.a.different college im looking to going to now. Im worried i wont achieve financial aid. So I need to know of I will achieve it before I start really planing this. My sister who said she was in a similiar situation (only failed one class but the university refused to give her aid for the next semester but went to this college amd got aid) thinks i will receive financial aid.

So now long ahould it take for me to know after i submit it?

You need to have made academic process if you had FA at the original school. You can ask the new school what that would have been (number of credits, gpa).

When you applied to your new college…did you send the transcript from your first college four years ago?

No because of its guide lines. You apply as a transfer student if you have 12 credits (i checked to make sure it wasnt attempted 12 credits because i know some schools have those guide lines). No where in the application for freshman was there anything about other schools. So i was thinking i just wouldn’t say anything about the other school? Even if I’ll have to end up retaking a class i passed. If they asked I can just state I didn’t know I was supppse to inform them as I applied in their guide lines.

That what i was had generally thought. That i would have to save up for a semester of classes. But my as i ssid my sister got approved in a similar situation…so im hoping i will be but wo der how long it takes to know if you’re approved.

so…you only went to the other college for one semester! And got less than 12 credits?

Did you receive any federally funded financial aid at your previous school…even a Direct Loan?

Yes i did receive financial aid at the other school

@kelsmom

This student received financial aid at a previously college… but did NOT meet SAP there. She says she didn’t have to include her old college transcript to her new college… but wonders if she will be eligible to receive need based aid at the new school.

Won’t the new school at least see that th student received previous aid?

Can she receive aid at her new school under theses circumstances?

@Fangirl17 when did you submit your financial aid forms? Have you been accepted to the new college? Were you selected for verification?

I haven’t actually done either. Im a dependent on my parents and their taxes are out if wack. They didn’t file last year because their papers were lost. They are filing tomorrow and then i will finish the application and submit the FA.

Im not worried about being accepted. Its very easy for in state students to get in. Plus i did faorly well in high school with a large class size.

I do appreciate your guys trying to figure out if i will get it or not. But can anyone give me an estimate of when i should know if i get accepted after i submit.

Well…you first have to submit the FAFSA. For the 2018-2019 academic year, your parents need their 2016 taxes. Are you saying they are a year late filing those?

Apply to the college…and get the FAFSA done. Then once you are accepted to the college, you should, get a financial aid award as well…but that all depends on your financial aid application being submitted in a TIMELY fashion.

Once you submit that FAFSA, keep a very close eye on your student portal, and your email…and spam folder. Watch for any verification requests you might receive. IF you are selected for verification…that’s where it will be.

When are your parents planning to get their 2016 taxes done? You will have to wait for a few weeks after that to link their taxes from the IRS Data Retrieval tool to the FAFSA.

If they can’t link to the DRT, they will need to request a tax transcript. The college will want either the DRT or the tax transcript to make sure the info on your FAFSA is correct.

So…when will you know? Well…since you haven’t even started…it’s going to be a while!!

As I wrote before they are missing 2016 taxes and they are going to do when this weekend.

Yes I know it will be while. I was asking when I would know after I did all this. I guess I was hoping FAFSA would send email was in “been approved” or " denied".

It does not matter if she took 1 credit or 101 credits, OP was a matriculated student after high school she needed to submit her transcript when applying to return to school. It does not matter if she did poorly at the first college. It does not matter that she thought she did not have to submit transcripts because she had less than 12 credits. She will have to submit ALL transcripts.

Minimally, OP has misrepresented herself in the admissions process, which is ground for having admissions at the current school rescinded at any time.

Your school will be able to see that you previously received aid. You can look up to see how much pell you have used and your loans. If you had loans, they would have gone into repayment once you stopped attending school. This could be a problem if you defaulted on your loans.

You need to come clean with your school because any monies you received because you misrepresented your self you may have to pay back

Wow. Its not fair to say I have misrepresented myself when I’m following THEIR guidelines. In the apply for freahman application it even says to use it there “complete this application if fewer than 12 college credits. Even if you have some but not all”. Then in the application itself it does not ask for information of attending any other schools or mentions what to do if you have. That is not on me.

Obviously they will be able to see I got aid st the other school. I know that. Gezz. I haven’t even submitted the application yet.

Ok, but that does not mean that you don’t submit your transcript. You need to carefully read the application documentation requirements. What is the school, we can show you what you need to submit.

You did not follow their guidelines. You are not a first time freshman, you can apply as a freshman because you have less than 12 credits. The college still treats you as a freshman from a credit standpoint, you have previously attended college.

Does the school ask if you have previously attended college? Does the school ask if you are a first time freshman. While they may not consider you a transfer student because you have less than 12 credits, they will also not consider you a first time freshman who is attending college for the first time straight out of high school.

Minimally the FAFSA will ask for your status you will not be able to check never attended college and first year undergraduate. You will have to check attended college before and first year undergraduate (which you would be from a credit perspective). Now if you check never attended college, you will get flagged because you are going to show up as having previously received aid.

If you have not submitted the application yet, then make sure that you submit your transcripts from your previous school. There is now a national clearinghouse and you will come up showing that you were previously in college.

You will NOT receive a financial aid award from “FAFSA”. Your financial aid award will come from the college.

So…until you have applied and been accepted …and your financial aid has been calculated…you won’t know anything except your FAFSA EFC…which will be on the SAR (student aid report) you receive once the FAFSA has been completed.

What kind of aid are you hoping to get? Federally funded? If so…you do understand that the federally funded aid you previously received WILL count in the aggregate amount for any colleges…even IF you didn’t send your transcript to school number 2.

And really…I know there are a few colleges where you can apply NOT as a transfer with less than a certain number of credits…but in the vast majority of cases…the applications ask “have you taken college courses elsewhere”, then “if yes, include transcripts of all college courses you have previously taken.

My kids had to do that for dual enrollment HS/college courses taken in high school when they applied to colleges for admission as incoming freshmen.

I’m finding it hard to believe your school doesn’t care about those requirements. Where I am…even the community colleges want that info for students applying to matriculate for a degree.

I think you’re misunderstanding what the college meant. When they say that you’re considered a transfer if you have x number of credits that’s for financial aid, not admissions. You still have to submit all your transcripts, but you’re eligible for whatever freshmen grants they offer. Send them your transcripts and submit the financial aid forms. If you qualify for enough aid, which you won’t know until you get your financial aid package, you can attend. If not, take some classes at a cc until you’ve met the Satisfactory Academic Progress guidelines.
