I want to major in biological sciences at a UC. How long will it take me to complete my IGETC and my pre-reqs at a CCC? Is IGETC even required for biology majors? I plan on transferring to UCSD. Will doing the TAG program guarantee a spot even if I’m not done with my pre-reqs?

It should take a maximum of 2 years. You could make it a year, however, it is much tougher. The normal time it takes is around 2 years for anyone to get their IGETC and L & S requirements done; even more biology majors.

IGETC is required for biology majors.

I don’t believe a TAG agreement will guarantee a spot. However, if you file a TAG agreement, your percentage chance of getting admitted is much greater.

Just as a side note, try to get some extra curricular activities in that help you grow with your major. It will help you in your admission essay as well as with getting extra curricular activities on your list. For example; if you plan to become a doctor, try and join a club that deals with administration. You can only help volunteer at a local hospital or clinic. You got a lot of competition when you apply. You want them to think “This guy is really qualified through his academic achievements as well preparation for his major.”

I think you’ll probably need 3 years to complete IGETC and major pre-reqs, at least I did as a physics major. I didn’t even bother with IGETC until I knew I had to be here for a third year.

You need to go to assist.org and plan out all the classes you’ll need to take to complete IGETC at your school. Then go to the UC’s websites and find out what classes you’ll have to take there if you don’t complete IGETC. You may find that one of the paths will be significantly easier for you (in my case, failure to complete IGETC would have resulted in more english classes, which I would not be able to pass).

Does that mean I can finish my IGETC within my first year at a CCC? According to assist.org I am required to take eight additional pre-req courses for UCSD. Can all of this fit in a two year time frame? Sorry for not understanding… I’m still in high school mode.

try this
fall:
Eng 1a
chem 1a
calculus 1
some other ge

spring:
physic (first sem)
bio 1a
cal 2
some other ge

summer
chem 1b
eng (critical thinking)
some other ge

Fall:
bio 1b
o chem (first sem)
physic (second sem)

Spring :
calculus 3
o chem (second sem)
Physic (third sem)
some other ge

possible to do it in two years, ge in intersession class

Most “hard” science majors take 3 years at a CCC. Every Bio, Chemist, Physics, Engineering major etc. that I know has been there for over 2 years.

Thanks for the advice guys!
