I am planning on applying to Yale either RD or SCEA. I am wondering, how low is too low of a rank for Yale?

I am definitely top 5% of a very, very competitive public high school in California (we send about ~10 to HYPS a year), maybe even 3%. That would put me at about the top 20 ish people out of about 800 kids in my grade. I talked to my school counselor and he said that I had very good EC’s compared to the rest of the kids who may have higher ranks than me in school. However, I am still concerned that compared to the rest of the country, my rank is too low for Yale SCEA. Will I be compared more against my fellow applicants from my school (probably about 15 or more will apply SCEA to Yale) or will I be compared to the rest of the country, and do I still have a chance?

This rank is the result of 4 B’s scattered throughout my entire high school career. All others have been A’s. I have taken all Pre-AP/AP/Pre-IB/IB classes for all my years in high school/it’s a pretty tough curriculum.

Your rank is fine. The only rank that could decidedly hurt you would be the one that would shatter your confidence to the point where you wouldn’t even consider applying.
