How many all nighters do you experience at Cornell

I hate all nighters so I’m wondering if they’re common at Cornell.

no one is a fan of all nighters in high school. in college, you’ll pull them voluntarily. i never pulled one in high school and i do it now a whole lot not because i’m forced to because of the intense workload (maybe once every other month bc of the workload), but often because I’m just out and about before 8pm and then just chill out in my dorm until maybe 10.30, then start my work/studying/reading.

plenty of all nighters due to partying, every thursday friday and saturday. if breakfast/lunch didn’t close at 2pm, i wouldn’t wake up until 3 or 4 easy. i love it.

I don’t think i’ve pulled an all-nighter yet (at least for studying), because I love sleep. I have for other reasons though…

I do know some people who are crazy and do all-nighters every day.

Twice a day every day.

i’d say about 1/4 pull all nighters more than once a week…

1/2 pull at least once a month…

the rest manage well enough

My daughter (3rd year at Cornell) never. I know she’s stayed out 3am or later partying, but never for schoolwork yet. At this point she is so good at picking her classes she may even get her first straight A semester.

I had some late nights…but never needed to pull an all nighter.

Whether you pull an all nighter or not, it’s all in time management. My daughter will start her paper a month ahead and go to office hours. Depending on her schedule, she would start studying for her exams few weeks ahead. Her high school operated very much like a college, they all had their syllabus in the beginning of a semester so they all knew their homework, paper and test schedule. In college you have fewer tests (2-3 a semester) and they count a lot more. If you mess up one, it’s very hard to climb back up. It is important not to fall behind and go to office hours for help if necessary.

Some students pull all nighters because they waste time surfing the net, texting, and do not start to get down to real work until late at night. I think it’s a matter of choice.

I never pulled an all-nighter in HS and haven’t had to here yet, either. It can be done and is definitely all about time management.

They happen occasionally, mostly because of procrastination and/or a busy schedule and/or a prelim, but not because your just swamped with work. If you manage your time well enough, you shouldn’t have a problem. With that said, I pull all-nighters when I write papers (I work well when deadlines are looming, apparently), so, for me, they happen once or twice a month…sometimes less, usually not more.

Never! Just manage your time and you won’t have to

All depends on your courses and time management skills. For example, the weekly algorithms homeworks take a LOT of time thinking about. Sure, you can go to office hours and probably snipe the answers off of someone else, but that gets rid of the point. If you’re taking other courses, then it can get pushed to Thursday night. Of the first 5 homeworks, 4 of them were all nighters for me and my friends.

I only pulled all-nighters to party or to debate politics until the sun came up.

ugh! never EVER, high school or college. during a summer vacation from high school I stayed up all night once for travel reasons and it was so bizarre. the next day was totally shot in terms of mental function.
the closest I’ve come was when I finished preparing a presentation around 4 AM and then had to give it at 9 AM. that was toward the end of last semester and brought about by ill-advised DVD-viewing.
now I am almost always in bed by 2 AM and I still end up napping at least once a week.

BS

I probably pulled around 1 per year. If you are half way on top of things, you won’t need to pull any all-nighters.

ok maybe i exaggerated :stuck_out_tongue:

depends on WHO u know…

i’d say 1/4 at least do this once a month…usually voluntary…

I’ve pulled all-nighters in high school (yes, I went to that sort of school) but I’ve always felt that all-nighters are far less productive than they’re reputed to be. Beyond a certain point, you continue with your work into the wee hours only because of the illusion of real productivity. The advice of some posters above (to put in sustained long-term effort and not fall behind) is invaluable. I really doubt you’ll have to pull all-nighters if you invest the sustained discipline that will earn you good grades.

I’ve pulled lots of all nighters.

However not a single one has been because of work  I’ve stayed up pretty late doing work on a few rare occasions, but even those times it’s because I procrastinate or get sidetracked.

Unless you’re a crazy engineer taking 20+ credits, don’t worry about it.

You’re still exaggerating.

lol @ cayuga…not based on my facebook friends wall posts lool!

inb4 blind judgment of the company i keep >_>

though even if i am exaggerating…you’ll always have people who are night owls and work late into the night (even if not a TRUE all nighter)

you will also have others who wake up early…

it’s college…YOU DECIDE your schedule :)
