I was making a list of things that I’d like to put in my dorm in Craige. My question is how many things could I plug in without tripping the circuits? Also, will I get into trouble for having too many appliances? I was thinking about a portable A/C, a mini fridge and a microwave as well as any other things like an alarm clock and laptop. Thanks for your help.

Definitely get a surge protector.

I had like eight thousand surge protectors and still needed more.

so with surge protectors, you’re fine?

You can’t bring a portable A/C.

Thanks for the link for housing. I found a portable A/C that doesn’t exceed the allowed wattage so hopefully it won’t blow a circuit. Any tips on somehow concealing this device? Or do they even do appliance checks? For that matter, is it even worth it? I mean I was at Purdue for a week and the heat was stifling.

The problem is not just you bringing a portable A/C, it’s the problem of EVERYONE bringing a portable A/C. If you bring one and hide it, then other people might do the same, which will eventually blow a circuit. Bring a couple of fans and you’ll be fine.

Sorry I’m not trying to annoy you or anything but this just seems important to me at the moment. The thing is, under the Housing FAQ, a portable A/C of the wattage that I want to bring would be allowed IF it were any other appliance. This means that if every student did buy one, the dorm’s circuitry should still be able to support the load.

You can do whatever you want, I’m just telling you that they will make you remove it if you’re caught with it. Call housing if you really think you should be allowed to bring it.

Or keep your mini fridge door open if worse comes to worse.

You’re not allowed to have a non university-owned A/C in your room regardless of the wattage as per the rules. If you don’t care about the rules, then don’t worry about it.

also, i lived in ehaus last year (i’ll be a sophomore) and we NEVER had any random room checks. so basically, if there’s anything in your room you don’t want your RA to see, you can easily remove or hide it before you check out for fall, winter, and spring breaks.

For the big breaks like winter break they do do an inspection, and you’d get a fine for something like that, I’m pretty sure.

yeah, they do inspections before breaks, but never any that are totally random, so you can easily prepare for them if necessary haha.
