How many aps do most students have?

Hi,
My son will be attending Penn in the fall and he’s very worried about not having alot of AP credits. He has only 4-5s and 4-4s so far he’ll only get waived from 4 classes? He’s worried that everyone will be waived from more than 10 classes with their high al scores so he’ll be one of the few taking intro classes. Is his concern unfounded? Thank you!

Every high school offers a different number of APs. Penn students will typically have taken many of the APs available to them. It really doesn’t matter if they’re waived from 10 or more. 4 courses, while not a very high number, isn’t far below average, which I’d assume would be around 6 or 7.

Are people encouraged to use AP credits to waive intro courses?

Most APs aren’t that useful and only count as elective credit. Most of the time you can’t use them to get out of intro courses without taking a placement exam at Penn. For example, a 5 on chemistry only gives you elective credit, to place out of the intro sequence you have to pass the placement exam.

At my penn preview day most of the current students I talked to as well as the other entering freshman had way less than the amount your son has.
