It will depend on how many AP courses your school offers. My school is a really small private school and is not so well-funded. I took only 3 APs in my junior year and are taking 4 more in senior year and I got waitlisted at Stanford. So, take as many as you can and do challenge yourself to your school’s limits.

I’ve taken both lit and lang, and in my opinion (humble as it may be), it’s a lot more interesting to read novels than to write nonfiction. Personal preference.
But seriously, take AP Lit. The ability to analyze fiction is something you’ll need in college, no matter where you go.

As to your other question, eatingFood is right. Challenge yourself. I took 1, 3, and 6 during F, S, and J year respectively. I got into Chicago, Caltech, and Stanford so far (rejected by MIT). A solid transcript does put you over other applicants. Contrary to popular wisom, EC’s and “character” don’t truly sell you to tough schools, unless you’re completely unique. For most of us, we rely on solid transcripts and good test scores to get in. It IS possible to have a life with 5/6 AP classes- just balance your time wisely. Best of luck!
