How many clothes are you taking?

Shower shoes are a pain until you get planter’s warts or athlete’s foot. Good luck. But if you are lucky enough to escape them, it is nice, not wearing shoes. I would kind of feel icky though.

I found I got used to it almost immediately-- it felt weird when I came home for a weekend in october and showered barefoot. This year I have a private bath and might wear shoes anyway. It feels weird to not have the traction anymore.

despite the utter disgustingness of walking through mold, pee, hair, fungus, and most likely jizz with your bare feet, dont you fall on the slippery floors without shoes???

“despite the utter disgustingness of walking through mold, pee, hair, fungus, and most likely jizz with your bare feet”
ha i think hearing all that together makes me def wanna wear shower shoes, even if they do bug me. i will not be able to get that list out of mind now. i hadnt thought of jizz yet, ew, i really really hope no one is big enough dick to do that in community showers

Trust me, as a girl who practically lived in guys’ dorms all year, be they best friends boyfriends or hookups, I’ve heard and seen nasty things about the way guys live. Girls aren’t much better, but at least we don’t… ya know… in the shower!

I just counted everything up and I have:

1 skirt
4 pairs of shorts (one being sleep boxers)
4 pairs of jeans (more will be coming)
1 pair of dress pants (more will be coming though)
3 pairs of sweatpants
3 pairs of yoga pants
2 pairs of scrub pants
23 everyday shirts (long and short sleeved combined with a couple of tanks thrown in there)
10 sleep shirts/t-shirts that I wear when everything else is dirty or I’m lazy and don’t’ care what I look like
9 camis/tanks for layering
14 sweaters/hoodies/cardigans (total)
4 dresses
LOTS of socks/underwear/bras

Maybe a dumb question…but what do people use dress pants for in college? I was planning on packing some, but was just wondering what occasions they are worn for?

I applied for a scholarship program and a couple of internships which resulted in needing dress pants, I hadn’t brought any and I got notice that I had an interview in the morning at 8pm the night before and had to make a mad dash to the store. I wasn’t anticipating needing them for anything, but you never know when a cool opportunity will pop up that you want to apply for.

I also had a date on valentines day at a fancy restaurant we had to walk to in the dead of winter, so I wore my dress pants then with a pretty top since I felt it was too cold for a dress.

Everything I wear regularly.

Oh they most definitely do.

14 Pairs of Boxer Briefs
That’s all.

Okay, so this looks to be just about my final count… I didn’t do as well as I’d hoped…

14 t shirts (for everyday wear, sleeping, and working out)
15 nice tops (grandma took me shopping!)
1 nice zip up sweatshirt
2 casual zip up sweatshirts
4 hoodies
2 weeks worth socks and underwar
5 shorts (three denim, two khaki)
2 jeans

I am going to add some workout shorts, and I am putting off making a decision about shoes. At some point in the first few months I am going to add a pair of khakis and dress pants.

*** guys. I’ve packed more than double of what most of you guys are bringing. And my closet is still more than half way full. How often do you wear things over again? I plan on wearing my t-shirts no more than thrice (but probably only twice) this year and dress shirts just once. I have two large suitcases filled to capacity and a ****load of plastic crates!

I can’t imagine paying for something I am only going to wear twice a year. I don’t have that kind of disposable income. I usually go two or three weeks before I wear the same thing again, and I try to mix up the outfits so that they don’t look identical every time. I feel like that’s probably sufficient, but that’s the standard of living I am used to. What I listed above is everything I own, except I am leaving a fair piece of my t shirt and hoody collections home.

Umm…materialistic much? Also…major waste of money! But then, if you have so much money that you can afford to do that, I guess it makes sense that you feel you need that much.

i dont know about everyone else but i had lots of extra room actually. this is what i brought:
-prob about 7 good t-shirts, then maybe like 7 crappy tshirts for working out
-4 pairs of shorts, and 2-3 pairs of athletic shorts
-2 weeks worth of underwear and socks
-1 hat
-3 pairs of jeans at least
-2 pairs of nice khaki chinos, maybe 1 pair of more casual ones
-1 pair of nikes, 1 pair of sperrys, 1 pair of black dress shoes, a pair of running shoes, and basketball shoes, and 1 or 2 pairs of sandals
-3 or 4 polos
-2 or 3 dress shirts
-five ties to mix and match with the shirts
-1 black suit
-4 button up shirts (2 casual, 2 semi-casual)
-north face and heavier winter jacket, and all the other winter stuff (although i wont bring these until later prob)
-1 nice sweater, 1 thermal, 1 casual sweater
and a couple more things

a whole bunch of people where saying to me and others that this was to much and we would be surprised at how little space we’ll have. that was b.s., at least for my dorm.
i only used 2 of 3 drawers and like half my closet. i could have probably brought all my clothes and i might not have used all the space up. other dorms i’ve been in have as much closet space as i do.

I’m actually not that much of a shopper, if that’s what you’re thinking. I stock up when stores have sales. I just get quality pieces at places like Banana Republic or Nordstrom, you get amazing quality clothes during end-of-the-season sales for the same price as a shirt at, let’s say, Forever 21. Plus, they last practically forever. Just got a sweet BCBG sundress at Nordstrom for 17 bucks, **** yea! Material is seven times better than Forever crap.

OK, hopefully this doesn’t change the direction of the thread.

I wasn’t commenting on how much you shop. I was commenting on how much you feel you need. Big difference. Why do you need 30 shirts only to wear each of them twice per year? It’s a waste.

What difference does it make if they’re high quality if you’re only going to wear them twice a year anyway? :stuck_out_tongue: By the time you could wear down even a crappy quality shirt it’d be out of style anyway.

I am glad you’ve said this though because I’ve often wondered if it could be possible for someone to really have so many clothes that they never have to repeat what they’re wearing, since I see LOTS of girls like you. I’ve had my closet so full I’ve had to buy an additional organizer for my room and still not been able to accomplish that and have always kind of wondered how they do it! You must just have tons of clothes.

cross, I think you did pretty good. You have a lot of things, but it’s a lot of variety with only a few in each category. Not bad at all. Not as much in this thread, a lot of people REALLY ARE overpacking here, but in general on this forum I am noticing a lot of people going kind of bonkers about minimalism moreso than is actually necessary. If you aren’t flying and are able to get things back home if you brought too much, it’s really no big deal, and you can fit a lot more stuff in those little dorms than you’d think if you’re creative.

Well to each their own. I don’t think so, though.

I bought a few tees from Forever and they were so flimsy after one wash there was a hole in them. I never have enough room in my closet either, and it’s pretty big too. What sucks is I hate putting them in drawers. :(
