How Many ECs are TOO many ECs?

So I have a dilemma on my hand. I’ve completed all parts of my applications except the EC section. I have a whole list of ECs that I was a part of, and they definitely don’t fit the limit of seven ECs on the CommonApp.

I have about 8 Arts (Theater and Music, my passions), 3 Community Service, 1 Academic, and 1 Sports. I’ve thought including 4 Arts that I spent the most time on, 2 Community Services, 1 Academic, and 1 Sport on my CommonApp, and adding the rest in Additional Information section. But my main concern is that it would look simply like a laundry list. On the other hand, I still want to show that I’ve done other stuff than simply theater/music.

So how many ECs are too many ECs? Which ones should I cut and which ones should I keep?

Thanks! :)

My personal opinion is that a laundry list is merely a motley list of random, unrelated unimpressive ECs. Such a list hurts because it’s unimpressive. However, if you already have one or two extremely outstanding and passionate ECs, they are still equally impressive, even if followed by a whole laundry list that doesn’t add much.

Decide on which area of your ECs contains the most impressive achievements (theater and arts), and set aside maybe 3 slots for the 3 most impressive components of that area.

For the other 4 slots, put the more important and impressive ones outside your main EC area. If it’s not impressive, then throw it in the attached resume, even if it means that one area of your ECs cannot be represented in the main CA. You don’t need to represent every aspect of your ECs within the 7 main slots. If you’re worried about coming off as one-dimensional, then have at least 1 other area outside theater and arts in the 7 slots. How many, and which “other” areas to include there would depend on how impressive your minor areas are. You’ll have to balance and decide. So far, I think your configuration does sound good.
