How many figure drawing pieces?

Right now my portfolio consists of:
7 paintings from imagination
1 large charcoal drawing from imagination
1 painting from observation
2 charcoals from observation
and 5-6 charcoal figure drawings.

does this seem like a bad balance? thoughts would be appreciated.

That seems like a good balance to me. It does depend on the schools you are applying to. I am varying my portfolio depending on the school. For instance, I’ve heard that Ringling really loves figure drawings, and you could probably get in with a portfolio consisting entirely of them.

Hmm I think it really depends on where you’re applying and the quality of the work. If figure drawings are your strength, then definitely put 5-6 in. If they don’t shine as much as your other work, put maybe 3. Like gabbyness said, some schools love figure drawings, but others are more looking for other skills (ie: SAIC loves conceptual work). Check the school’s website, they generally post what kinds of things they like to see or require in portfolios.

Also, I guess it depends on what skills you’re showing through your figure drawings. Like if they’re just 6 works that are the same except different poses, maybe you should refrain from that many. But if some are in color, or ink, or pastel, or some show gesture while others are long poses, or some focus on strong composition, then 6 is probably fine.

yeah i think i might have to take a charcoal or two out and maybe try to replace tjem with one done in a different medium

also how do schools feel about collage? I did this piece where I collaged these vintage photographs then layered beeswax over them.
