How many Filipinos are at Duke?

I know there are a lot of Asians, but I wonder how many Filipinos there are. That way, I wouldn’t have to explain how I have a Hispanic last name yet look like an Asian lol (given the miracle that I get accepted, that is…)

I actually haven’t met any to be honest. I’ve met a couple from Singapore, Malaysia, but unfortunately, no Filipinos. I don’t think there are any here at Duke.

I believe Ventus is referring to Filipino-Americans, not actually those coming from the Philippines. Although according to the admissions website, the Philippines definitely has student representation in the class of 2016. Duke doesn’t keep track of how many Filipino Americans there are, but I’d definitely say you won’t feel out of place or anything. Definitely more Korean and Chinese Americans, but I’m sure there’s reasonable Filipino American representation too.

3.2 Filipinos.

Lol sorry. Yeah I was talking about Filipino-Americans, not int’l students from the Philippines.

^as in 3.2%?

None of the colleges track this info except on a self report basis so the information for any ethic group that is comprised of US students is not accurate. International info is accurate because the school has to get the official info fo the students to get their student visas. Even there, you get some hybrids in that some truly international kids may have US citizenship or permanent residence status but those are technicalities. (Example a child born in US and then raised by non US parents in foreign country and decides to come to US for school).

Asians tend to under report because there is no quarter in reporting their ethnicity and suspicions that it could adversely affect admission decisions at the more highly selective schools. Then you have the kids who are multi ethnic too. My friend’s children are half Filipino–one reported it to the school, the other didn’t which would have evened things out but they were at different schools at different times.

^Yeah I would’ve guessed. They list “Asian” but nothing more specific, so I was hoping for some more personal, firsthand knowledge since colleges don’t really report it.

honestly almost zero filipino, viet, or hispanic representation. and you will have to do a lot of explaining cuz there are hella ignorant ****s

I’m filipino too and I applied! I really hope it will give me an advanatge. I also checked off both Asian and Hispanic so hopefully they understand why.

^Isn’t there a box on the common app where it specifies “Filipino” as a subgroup under Asian?

There are 5, 6 if you count the cafeteria lady on North campus.

^North campus? Obviously, you aren’t a Duke student as no such campus exists…In any event, it probably won’t give you much of a leg up in admissions and you probably won’t feel like an extreme minority on campus as a Filipino. Duke is a very diverse and accepting place - lots of people from all over with different backgrounds. Don’t sweat it (or try to over analyze). Good luck.

…it was a joke…

Yepp. It should say PHL after specifying that you’re Filipino.

@ram: HAHAHA that’s pretty funny! That joke reminded me of last summer when I went on a week-long Caribbean cruise. Guess what race all the maids/waiters/cooks were…

In any case, it seems like I need to make more pansit than I imagined lol.

Darn, I just wanna know if I got in…
