I took Elementary Chinese 1 in college which was only 1 semester. It will give me 3 credit hours in college. So how many credits will I get in high school? I know I should ask my HS GC but my HS is closed in the summer.
In my HS, 1 semester is 1 credit. However since the college pace is faster I should be getting more HS credits for 1 semester in college right?
Most college classes are only one semester. You take fewer classes at a time in college than you do in high school, so it evens out.
Not necessarily; it depends on your school. At my high school, less time in class meant less credit (regardless of pace). We had 1 college credit hour = 0.2 high school credits. If you didn’t take the class through a dual-enrollment program, you might not get high school credit at all. I wouldn’t worry about it unless you’re trying to meet high school graduation requirements.
It is through a dual-enrollment program. Should I email the dual-enrollment coordinator at the college about this since it is open in the summer? Will she know? Yes I am trying to meet high school graduation requirements. I need a minimum of 4 foreign language credits which is 4 semester/2 years in high school.
I will be taking Elementary Chinese 2 in college this fall but if I only get 1 credit in high school per a college class then I won’t be able graduate.
Sure. You have nothing to lose if she doesn’t know. (Also, you might still be able to fulfill the graduation requirement even if you don’t technically get enough credits. For example, they could have you take an exam to show your knowledge.)
Does the course description for Chinese 2 say something like, “PREREQ: CHIN 101 or two years high school Chinese”? You might have to check another language for which there are equivalent high school classes.
In California, community college language classes that transfer to UCs are generally set up with the first semester equal to 2 years of high school and the second semester equal to the Level 3 high school class. So, the UC system requirement for dual-enrollment language is “any UC transferrable course(s) (excluding conversation) equivalent to two years of high school language instruction.” But, your high school will probably only give you 1 or 2 semesters credit. Ours gives 2 semesters.
That said, you mentioned that your course was 3 credit hours. Our language 1 classes are all 5 credit hours, so yours may not cover as much.
Since you will be taking Chinese 2 in college this fall, I don’t know that whether you get an answer now or next month makes a difference. You can go on your school district website and look for board policies regarding dual-enrollment. Or, you can ask the dual-enrollment coordinator at the college. Is dual-enrollment for other languages common where you are? If it is, there is probably a set policy. If not, you may be able to advocate for additional HS credit when people return.
Thanks I sent an email to the dual-enrollment coordinator. Regardless of her answer, I will ask for my transcript on the first day of school just to make sure because I’m paranoid.
It doesn’t say a prereq but there is a placement test. I have to know now because I need to select classes this week for the school year. No dual-enrollment for other languages isn’t common, most just take Spanish class. I took both Spanish(full year @high school) and Chinese 1 (1 semester @college) last year to decide which one I like better. If I only get 1 high school credit per college course then I have to stick with Spanish in order to graduate with honors.
Is your school district office open this summer? This is usually a policy set at the district level. If you don’t hear back from the dual-enrollment coordinator, you might look for contact information for someone like the “Assistant Superintendent for Instruction.”
Or course, I’m in CA, where there’s a policy for everything and UC transferability and a-g requirements drive how course credits are given.
I took Intermediate Algebra over the summer and finished the course within 8 weeks at a CC which is worth 3 credits there, got an overall (UW) grade of a 96.565, and I am getting 0.5 credits at my HS. However, I wasn’t taking this class looking for credit, just so I could get the Algebra II requirement out of the way and take Precalc as a sophomore. However, you say a semester class at your HS is 1 credit, but my HS has it as a semester class is half a credit, and a year course is one credit.
