My family has a difficulty in picking UCB and UCLA for my son.
We live in San Jose (Bay area) and my son has been accepted by both in Undeclared major in College of Letters and Sciences.

Parents want him to pick Berkeley but the child prefers to go UCLA mainly because he heard that UCLA is less competitive and more relaxed than Berkeley. It is said that in Berkeley most students could only sleep 6 hours per day because there are too much homework and assignments. Also life in Berkeley is very stressful even if you do not want to “A grade” student instead of an average student (B grade).

My major question is UCLA easier (more relaxed and more sleep) for an average student than Berkeley?
Your every advice and information is highly appreciated.
Thank you so much for your time and help.

I think this is an adorable question. Congrats on getting into both schools! I don’t think that UCLA is less competitive than UCB, particularly in certain majors, but I do think it is more relaxed in atmosphere.

I wish that was reality dontcha, couldn’t agree more, but many kids are told what school they will attend even when $ is even. “You will go to Berkeley. No soup (UCLA) for you!”

We have the same situation as yours (from the same area). My student chose to go UCLA.
LS majors are not easy in those two schools at all. Two things I would like to mention here: (1) UCLA is quarter system, 10 week is fast going (2) UCB is closer to your home, it maybe easy for him to go home or for you to go pick up him.

You may want to come to Bruin Day this weekend to see what you feel. UCLA is smaller campus than UCB. Dorms are all on the hill. You dont need a bike, it is easy to walk to lecture rooms. LS is stressful in UCLA, not easy.

UCLA students probably average less sleep because it’s on the quarter system. Midterms begin a couple weeks into the quarter and don’t end until finals. Don’t make the assumption that UCLA is inherently easier than Berkeley, as students are comparable depending on major.
