How many out-of-state students get accepted to the university of Washington?

I’m from South Dakota and I’m just wondering what are the chances of me getting in to Washington.
I have a 3.5 gpa and a 28 on my act. I do a lot of community service and I have placed at state level with horse riding. I have heard that the university of Washington doesn’t like accepting out of state people as much as they like accepting their residents. Is this true?

I just checked how many percent of students are in-state. It’s 73%. I’m not sure how many percent of out-of-state students are accepted, though.

Can you afford the out of state tuition?

Here’s an article from the Seattle Times from 2013: http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/more-applicants-make-getting-into-uw-tougher-this-year/. I think the trends are the same.

But the “word” around here is that in state students are having a tough time getting into the UW. I just think it has gotten a little tougher for students in general to be admitted there. However, if this is true from the article, “The UW is also trying to attract students from a wider geographic area…” then being from South Dakota might be helpful for you. (anyone reading the article will see they reference international students, but I think this would apply to US students too).

Here is a recent update from the Seattle Times:

http://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/education/uw-sees-18-rise-in-applications-to-be-a-husky/

UW Seattle is currently about 66% instate and 34% OOS and international.

This year’s freshman application pool is about 25% instate, 50% OOS and 25% international.

The total number of applicants is 43,334, up from 36,528 in 2015 and 31,611 in 2014.

Per Common Data Set, the average unweighted GPA for the freshman class entering UW Seattle in 2015 was 3.78/4.0 (up from 3.76 in 2014); the middle 50% SAT was 1650-2020 (up from 1630-1990 in 2014); and the middle 50% ACT Composite was 26-31 (up from 25-31 in 2014).

Based on the very large increase in applications for 2016 (which topped the record increase for 2015), I would expect these stats to tick higher again for this year’s entering class.

All that said, I think you have a decent chance, with your solid ACT and ECs balancing out a slightly below average GPA in the “holistic” admissions review. Good luck!

The University of Washington accepted something like 64% of in-state applicants last year as compared to 46% out-of state applicants. Given an acceptance rate of 54%, it is fairly conclusive that the University of Washington favors in-state applicants.

UW doesn’t accept transcripts from applicants so not sure where the GPA stats are coming from for 2016.

Be aware that many popular majors have competitive admission to get into the major after enrolling, if you are not directly admitted to the major as a frosh: http://www.washington.edu/uaa/advising/academic-planning/majors-and-minors/list-of-undergraduate-majors/
