How many people are humanities/liberal arts majors?

I’m very politically active and am interested in majoring in polisci… am I crazy for applying to MIT? I’m very strong in math and bio, but I am definitely more interested in politics/IR. What percentage of people at MIT even major in areas that aren’t engineering/science/math?

okay well i found the stats… lol 0.4% are polisci majors, and 3% are humanities majors (the majority being econ majors)… yay!

I’m guessing the stats you found are from the spreadsheet that only lists primary majors, meaning if they’re picking up a HASS double major (not uncommon), it wouldn’t be listed. Aside from that, lots of people pick up minors/further pursue HASS topics beyond GIRs ^.^

I’m a huge HASS lover, and I love it here :)

(I will note that my high school was HASS training ground with very little science. I learned lots of history and literature and writing. Though at MIT, I’ve had further opportunity to discover I love cultural anthropology and music as well!)

Economists would actually claim that they’re a social science, not a humanity.

Granted, given the economic turmoil of the last few years and the striking inability of the economics profession to provide clear policy guidance or even predictions, it’s questionable whether economics is indeed a social science or is in fact truly just a humanity.

Political science at MIT is likely to involve a lot of math. (I don’t actually know much about political science at MIT, but I had a friend who got a doctorate in political science at Cal Tech, and it involved a LOT of math.)

It’s great that MIT offers a nice range of humanities courses and potential second majors/minors. But don’t go to MIT to major in a humanities field. People don’t do that on purpose. (By “humanities field,” I DO NOT mean economics.)

Same goes with Poli Sci. I know more than one course 17 student that would get offended if I referred to the major as a humanities major.

Really, if you want to say humanities you’re referring to the 21 courses (e.g. lit, writing, history, music (which borders on art), and anthropology (which borders on social science))

what about Course 11?
