As Sylvan Gallawa, 24, prepared to graduate from college last year, he found himself in an enviable position: He had the luxury of choosing from seven job offers. He eventually accepted one that paid six figures. Stories like Gallawa’s aren’t unusual at California State University Maritime Academy…
It is not exactly a surprise that maritime academies in California and elsewhere that focus on a few majors pertaining to in-demand types of jobs produce graduates who tend to get well paying jobs of those types.
The article emphasizes the college, while instead it’s the choice of study that is driving the high income among CSU Maritime grads… Any college where most grads have maritime related degrees will have high salaries. For example, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy was $80k, SUNY Maritime was $77k, etc. A similar idea occurs with other fields. For example, Stevens Institute of Tech, Rennselear Polytech Institute, and Babson had higher median incomes than any of the maritime schools, higher than Stanford, higher than all but one ivy, etc.
