How many schools should I apply to??

I think I am going to apply to:

Boston University
NYU
Syracuse
Southern Methodist University
University of Texas- Austin
Temple University
Penn State University- University Park
George Washington University
University of Miami
Northwestern University (Early Decision)
University of Southern California

Is that to many colleges to apply to? I am planning to major in Broadcast Journalism and some other dicipline. What schools should I cut if any? I want a school that is in or close to a city and is well known. I want a school that can get me a good job. Any suggestions on schools I should add or take off? People are saying that I am applying to way to many schools especially scince I am applying ED to Northwestern (Medill) and will have to go there if accepted! Suggestions please!

11 is very doable.

I would cut southern methodist.

This is what I will be doing next year.

UW-Seattle
UIUC
UMD-College Park
Binghamton
PSU-UP
Stonybrook
George Washington U.
UM-Twin Cities

Hunter College
Baruch College
City College of NY

The last three…hm… I don’t know why. LOL. I think I should take them out.

Just kidding.

I applied to three. I knew where I wanted to go and had the good sense to realize that applying to schools I didn’t actually want to attend was a waste of time and money. The other two schools were basically back-ups after Katrina happened.

My opinion on the matter:

If you can actually see yourself at any one of those 11 schools, good luck with the apps.

If you’re just doing it to feel good that a lot schools accepted you, narrow your list down and find something better to do with your time.

I’m doing rounds of applications.

ROUND 1:

 1. NYU Stern ED
 2. University of Michigan (rolling-early october)
 3. University of Chicago EA
 4. Boston College(Business) EA

ROUND 2: (hopefully I can skip this-these are RDs)

 1. University of MD Smith
 2. Indiana U. Kelley
 3. Boston Univ (Business)
 4. Babson College
 5. Northeastern (Business)
 6. Tufts (Economics)
 7. Whatever else

ROUND 3: (really hope I can skip this)
-Appeals

ROUND 4: (end of year)
-Reject colleges (ideally I would only reject Chicago/Michigan/BC)
-Send in the fat check to NYU Stern (ideally in jan)
-Send in my last housing/enrollment forms to NYU Stern
-Get a job over the summer
-Possibly take classes at the London School of Econ
-Disneyland/Graduation/Cruise!!!

I’m applying to like 15 schools. I don’t care if I get 14 rejections if I get into NYU Stern.

ihateCA, you are a genius. I should be doing rounds as well.

This is my rounds of applications.

ROUND 1: (Mail by October 23) -Rolling Admissions

 1. University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (Priority)
 2. University of Washington-Seattle (Priority)

ROUND 2: (Mail by November 27) -Priority Admissions
[[Hopefully I can skip this.]]

 1. University of Maryland-College Park (Priority/EA)
 2. George Washington University (Priority)
 3. Binghamton University (Priority)
 4. Stonybrook University (Priority)
 5. University of Minnesota-Twin Cities (Priority)
 6. Penn State University-University Park (Rolling)

ROUND 3: (Mail by January 24) -Regular Admissions
[[I really hope I can skip this.]]

 1. Hunter College (CUNY)
 2. Baruch College (CUNY)
 3. City College of New York (CUNY)

ROUND 4: End Of Year

 • Reject colleges (Ideally I would only reject UIUC or UW-Seattle).
 • Send in the fat check to UIUC or UW-Seattle (ideally in Feb.)
 • Send in my last housing/enrollment to UIUC or UW-Seattle.
 • Get a job over the summer.
 • Most likely take classes at Hunter College again for more credits.
 • Graduation/Relax!!! :)

I am applying to 11 schools. I don’t care if I get 10 rejections if I get into either UIUC or UW-Seattle. If I get into both (crosses fingers), I will visit both colleges to make a final decision. :)

Go ahead and apply to as many as you want, assuming you were like me and didn’t know well enough what school I really wanted to go to. This year I had actually applied to 12 colleges and fortunately managed to get into all of them, but hmmmmm, with only about a week left I don’t know where I want to go :(

i guess what i’m going to do sort of counts as “rounds”:

I’ll apply to a SCEA school, and if I get in, i’m going to withdraw 5-6 schools, if not applying to 16 schools.

ihateCA, you can’t apply Early Decision and Early Action at the same time. If you want NYU Stern ED, you’ll have to wait until Regular Decision for the others.

Actually, I’m not sure about the rolling admissions. Check on that.

where the hell does it say that?

You can definitely apply ED and EA so long as the EA schools arent SCEA.

It’s a requirement of Early Decision, not Early Action.

According to College Board:
“Early decision plans are “binding,” meaning if you apply as an early decision candidate, you agree to attend the college if it accepts you and offers an adequate financial aid package. Although you can apply to only one college for early decision, you may apply to other colleges under regular admission. If you’re accepted by your first-choice college early, you must withdraw all other applications. Usually, colleges insist on a nonrefundable deposit well before May 1.”

Round 1
Michigan
Rutgers

Round 2
Yale SCEA

Round 3
Chicago
Columbia
Cornell
Harvard
MIT
Princeton
Stanford

I’m considering switching to EA Chicago and MIT and RD Yale.

nowhere on NYU admissions does it say that u can’t do EAs. U can’t do two EDs. Only, if you get in, u have to go to NYU, no questions asked. NYU doesn’t restrict for EAs. I’ll check with NYU about it.

That would be a good idea. Perhaps they’re different, but every ED college I looked at handled it in much the same way.

GO NY! Good luck
