How many sets of sheets does a freshman need for the dorm?

I really don’t know how many sets my Ds had but I think one set should suffice. When so inclined they can take the sheets off, wash them, then put them back on. Having two sets just means they have to store one set someplace. Also, most dorm beds are extra long singles and once they move off-campus they’ll likely never use them again so it’s money wasted.

Cards4Life - yes, you can buy just one sheet at a time but you will have limited choices. I saw XL twins in singles at my local LinensNThings last week. My D likes the bottom sheet/comforter combo also, so she bought 2 sets in colors that went together and sewed a duvet/comforter cover out of the 2 top sheets. (Welll, OK - I sewed it, not her. Make it just an inch bigger than your comforter. Make sure the bottom edge is the finished bottom edge of the sheets. Leave the middle half of the bottom edge open and sew snaps there to keep it closed.) Since she likes to sleep with 2 pillows, buying the sets gave her 2 pillowcases also.

I had two sets. Sure, one will suffice, but you might reach the point when you want to change the sheets but don’t want to immediately do the laundry. Unless one has very fancy sheets, a second set is pretty cheap, and is really not much to store.

I did ruin one set with large ink stains (I’m a work on my bed person), so one has to be replaced for next year. So even if you only use one for the first year, the extra set is unlikely to go to waste for long.

My niece brouht her second set home. She told my sister didn’t want two sets at college because the second set just took up needed space in her dorm room, I am sending my daughter with one set plus one extra bottom sheet, just in case.

My S had two sets for two years. The end of school this year I had him either throw out or donate all of his bedding (comforter included). We will start anew for junior year. I never saw any of his bedding after we dropped him off freshman year, since he is 3000 miles away and stored most of his belongings for the summer. They definitely need two sets since dorm living pretty much means the bed is where they sleep, eat, study, etc.

Cards4life,
If you buy one whole set and use only the bottom (my kids do the same), the top sheet can be used for that !?milk?! spill or for a guest.

I am with Cards4life. In my house I just buy fitted sheets. I also buy cheap comforters whenever I see them on sale. So to make their beds, all the kids have to do his fluff the pillow and comforter. They can wash the comforter, bottom sheet and pillowcase easily. I provide 2 bottom sheets, 4 pillow cases and 2 comforters. The extra comforter comes in handy as sleeping bag.

However, an top sheet can be very useful. If your dorm is not airconditioned, that may be the only cover bearable. Or if your dorm is overheated, the same applies. A sheet can be used as a costumes (great toga, cape), a quick hobo bag, window cover, partition, rope, you name it.

S1 took one set freshman yr. Threw them away (unwashed I’m pretty sure) before coming home for the summer. Bought him fitted sheet only for soph. year that lasted into jr. yr.
For sr. yr. I have again bought him a fitted sheet and a new comforter. It’s not that I’m that cheap…it’s just what he wants.

S2 will be a freshman in Aug. He is also not interested in having a top sheet.

2 sets…D1 changed fairly often but gave her some time to get the first set washed. She even washed her comforter, fleece blanket and futon cover several times a year!!!

Not to be gross or anything, but I think two sets is the better idea for girls, just in case they have some sort of overnight ‘leakage’ during periods. They will always have a clean set to put on if they can’t do laundry immediately the next day.

My girlfriend spotted my sheets one night. I wasn’t able to get the stain out, and whenever I’m sitting on my bed reading I keep seeing the dark spot out of my peripheral vision and think it’s a bug crawling towards me. :(

I’ve always gone with the two fitted sheets and one loose sheet. Mostly because I feel the fitted sheets get a lot more scuzzy than the top ones do. I tend to sweat a lot at night when it’s hot out, and nothing holds heat better than a gross, sweaty sheet.

I’ve posted this before, but I purchased 2 fitted sheets for my son’s bed. I placed BOTH of them on the bed, one on top of the other. About midway through the year, he took the top fitted sheet off and used the one underneath until school was over.

2 sets. One came home in the original case for DS’s (BTW get dark colors). Sometimes they would bring them home for laundry at breaks if I asked. 2 sets for DD. She did laundry every 2 weeks washed and replaced the one, but had the other set for guests, picnics (top sheet), togas, etc.

One set for males.

My DS can store things in the dorm basement and he would have stored his towels and bedding. I insisted he bring them home. 1) So I would know they
were laundered well and 2) I didn’t want them stored in a basement, eww.

We did that freshman year. Her sister helped her get set up in subsequent years. It was a “don’t ask, don’t tell situation”.

LOL ek. I dont know whether to laugh or cry!

Wait-- this is a set up for a good joke. How many sheet sets does it take to change a bed in a freshman dorm room? Well, only one set, but the bed has to really want to have to change. Ok, bad. Sorry.

My son only wanted one set of sheets, but he got black ones. They look very classy and would conceal stains nicely. He does wash them though.

im going with two sets of normal cotton sheets and then a set of flannel sheets for when it gets cold. but then again i get cold very easily.

oh yeah flannel sheets- I guess she had four sets altogether- they were all jewel tones so they didn’t show the dirt!
( she did go swimming quite a bit- so at least she was cleanish)

D1 likes the tshirt material sheets.
