How many sold their car?

I’m coming to UCLA as a freshman next year. I have a car that’s worth about $4,000 now, and I’m wondering if it’s worth selling at this point since I won’t be able to use it all much at UCLA. Selling it later wouldn’t make much sense.

So here is my question, how many UCLA students sold their cars before or during their first year, and of those that have, have any of you regretted it?

Also, of those who kept their cars, have you found much of a use for them beyond driving back home?

i think youll spend more in gas waiting in traffic than maintaining ur car.

dont bring your car…you dont need it.

Plus insurance.

My parents will probably sell my car. I have a 04 Acura. They figure there’s no point letting it sit and depreciate since I probably won’t have a car at school for at least 2 years. I am more leaning towards Cal right now, but you do not want to bring a car to LA!

I disagree with those arguing against a car to an extent.

Under a specific conditon: You get parking.

Having a car at UCLA really allows you to explore the many options that LA offers without having to suffer under the horrific bus system. What if you decide to go down to Santa Monica 3rd Street to go catch the farmer’s market. No car? Huge hassle.

Let’s say you want to go to Ralph’s and get some groceries. No car? Huge hassle.

Having a car has serious perks.

Having a friend with a car has more perks. :)

“Under a specific conditon: You get parking.”

But you have to have a really good reason… like having to commute to UCLA, or having to commute to a job from UCLA? Right?

No, not necessarily. Sometimes, you just get lucky.

Oh one thing I wanted to point out is that sometimes commuters do not get parking. I have a friend who didn’t get parking last year for one quarter even though she commuted.

As a commuter, I kept my car. (However, even in the dorms I kept my car as it is nice to go to places w/o worrying about bus times.)

If you don’t get parking as a commuter (happened to me), just do daily parking, especially if you don’t have daily classes. If you don’t get parking and you are a dormer, I’d leave the car at home.

agentmichi, you dormed your first year and then commuted?

I did not have a car my first year (didn’t know how to drive ^^) but I had a car and lived on campus my first year (except for Fall Quarter as I did not have parking then so I left the car at home). Now, in my third year, I commute. Most of my classes are in the afternoon and go until night so I avoid traffic. ^^
