How many units first semester??

I am a transfer student coming from a community college in Los Angeles. I’ve been living in an apartment since high school (my own room), and have never had to share a room, or live in a “college atmosphere” before. After speaking with my academic advisor, she suggested I take 3 classes (12 units) my first semester, just to allow myself to adjust to both the city, as well as any academic “differences” between the courses I’ve been taking at my JC, and courses at NYU. After my first semester, I could begin taking 4 classes (16 units).

For anyone experienced in this matter, what would your input be? I’ve never lived this far away from home, and would be lying if the 3,000 mile difference wasn’t intimidating. Do those of you with experience in this matter feel I’m making a good choice?

I realize this is a subjective situation, but opinions would be really appreciated!

It depends on what type of person you are. If you like to try new things and explore a lot, then taking 12 credits may give you time for that. Some may feel intimidated by the environment and take 18 credits to help distract them and fill their schedule. Personally as a transfer I wanted to ease into the environment, but I ended up taking 18 credits. I don’t think it really matters all that much how many credits you take but more on your personality.

I ended up taking 16 credits my first semester. I transferred from a CC and I’ll admit, I was overwhelmed at the time. It was a HUGE adjustment for me. If you can take 12 and still graduate on time, I would take 12.
