How Many Years of a High School Class Equal 1 Semester of College?

I’ve seen conflicting answers… Some say one semester equals one year of high school, others say it equals two years. Is there an absolute answer on this?

Does the rigor count? For example, the Spanish department at my school is notoriously easy, while our math department is not… However, colleges don’t know that, so would both AP Spanish and Calc AB or BC give you the same number of credits for their respective subjects/classes in college? If not, how would it be determined? How would placement be determined if someone took classes at CC to try and get into an AP class? For example, if someone took Spanish 101 and 102 at their CC… Would it be enough to get put into AP, or would they need 2 more classes?

Conflicting answers because it depends. Every school will have its own policies.

I’m aware of one university at which four years of high school Chinese and a 5 on the Chinese AP exam generally results in placement into the first semester of first year Chinese.

AP credit is determined by exam scores.

It depends on how your schedule is and how much time you spend in each class each day. Most schools go where you normally take 8 classes for an entire year. Going with that, I’m pretty sure that 1 yr in high = 1 semester as normally you take 4 classes per semester in college. In college, you dedicate a lot of time to a class for a short amount period of time compared to high school where you dedicate a smaller amount of time over a longer period of time, if that makes any sense. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is how it works.

Like it was said above, AP scores are only determined by the score you get in the AP exam, not your grade in the class or how hard it was. For placement in courses taken from CC, I would discuss that with your GC. I would think it would depend on what the specific CC classes teach compared to your specific high school ones, but I’m not positive.
