How much of a difference in the future will be for example studying economics in harvard (number 1 school in economics) compared to studying in boston university (number 24 in economics), what would be the pay difference future difference etc?

Depends on how much each costs you. Plus, ten years down the line your job experience will be more important. However, if you can get into Harvard and choose to go to BU than the pay difference would probably not be that much. One of the reasons that graduates of HYP do well is because of what they had to do to get into those schools. It all depends on how you learn and the type of environment you’re going for, there are cases where going to a lower tier school would be much more beneficial than going to number one.

thanks really helpful

I personally don’t think that it makes much difference unless you succeed academically at BU and get plenty of work experience through internships, research etc…

another question is if i could transfer from bu to nyu or columbia or a better university after one year at bu if i get really good grades

yes you could but do consider that transferring would be mean making new friends, adjusting environments etc…
