Just looking for a quick poll to get some sense of averages amongst CCers. Feel free to add any additional information like part-time jobs and such.

I stopped giving allowance when my S’s got part-time jobs in high school.

Prior to that, their allowance was not given in cash, but was direct deposited into online savings accounts each week. They knew they had the money, and that it was theirs to use as they wished, but they were less inclined to spend it foolishly since they didn’t have a lot of cash on hand.

in high school our kids allowance is $1 for each year of their age each week (so $14-$18/wk)

in college we pay for them to go to the school of their choice … and they are on their own for all discretionary expenses … so $0

our kids, now 13 and 18 never really got an allowance. If they needed money for whatever - reasonable of course, we would give it to them, but not excessively… Once my D (now 18) got a part time job (at 14), she started paying for most of the “whatevers” and if we chose to “throw her a bone”, we would, but in general, she pays for her extras, etc.

My son, doesn’t really ask for much so when he asks, as long as its reasonable, etc., we will give him some money , just kinda depends.

D never got an allowance in high school. We paid reasonable expenses. In college (she is a freshman), we pay for needs and she pays for wants. She has a meal plan that is more than sufficient, according to her, and we cover books. She stocks up on necessities like shampoo etc when she is home for breaks (on our dime). She has a part-time campus job that pays her $150 a week. That has been enough to replenish her savings account to pre-college level and more than cover her wants. Next year she will be an RA, which between the two jobs will pay her $350 a week. She will be covering all books and wants. Needs still on us.

No allowance in college, discretionary $ must be attained through a summer or school year job or both. In high school, each child got $100 a month for. clothing and $20 a week for lunch. If they packed a lunch they kept the lunch money. (I hated packing lunches and always had plenty of healthy choices to pack. Well, the home-baked cookies weren’t healthy) All 3 D’s usually packed a lunch but S never did. He never spent all his clothing allowance on clothes though. They all had parttime jobs for extra money.

In high school we are also at $100 a month for clothes and entertainment. In college she gets COA for the year in July. It’s up to her how to pay tuition and rent and such. She’s in her third year, and has never had a problem with that.

My parents usually give me $20/week, but the vast majority of that goes towards buying lunch, so it’s really more of a necessity than anything else. If I go shopping I nearly always use giftcards I’ve gotten and don’t spend much real money. If something comes up and I need money (i.e. prom tickets), they’ll give that to me as a lump sum.

emgamac, wow what parttime campus job pays $150 a week?

We gave them a very small allowance in high school. Like $.50/grade until they were old enough to get part time jobs. So $5 a week as a sophomore until they turned 16. No 16 should not be able to earn enough spending money in a week. Never gave them allowance in college. They worked summers to earn spending money for the year.

Never an allowance - they worked.

No allowance in high school or college…

DD worked in college…$12 an hour…about 10-15 hours a week…made $150 a week…or more. It IS possible.

I never got an allowance. My parents would give me money if I asked for it and they felt I had earned it. I didn’t ask for much though. Never liked clothes and the only thing I really spent money on was sports equipment which last years. When I was 12, I started working with my dad and haven’t gotten much since then.

I don’t think anyone 16+ deserves an allowance. Go get a job!

Hoosiermom, D is a student representative for the university’s credit union. She has a partner and their job is to increase to credit union’s visibility on campus. They go to dorm meetings and sporting events and activities fairs.(No they are not the ones offering t-shirts for credit card applications) Job is totally flexible and she can keep it until she graduates. It’s a max of 10 hours per week at $15 per hour. Oh, and she tweets and Facebooks for them. I thought it was a made-up job until she showed me her business cards, name tag and polo and button down shirts. I guess it beats my minimum wage job at the bookstore back in the day.

emgamac, thanks. I now think my D’s need to think outside the box when looking for a job on campus.

No allowance in high school or college. They all had jobs throughout college.
