How much "alone time" does a plebe have?

Well, simple question: I was wondering how much time plebes have (excluding plebe summer of course) to just sit in their chair and read a book, or listen to music, or go for a jog, or talk to friends online, if any time at all! Thanks!

you have got to be kidding!!

Well, generally speaking you can forget listening to music except at the Sponsor’s house.

As for the rest, I recall being bothered VERY few times during study hall. I could study or read a book or write a letter. Whatever.

During periods with no classes, a Plebe can do almost anything he wants. If he wants to run, he can go after class if he’s “off” his sport that day, or can do so in the morning before Plebe reveille.

Believe me, they find the time to do what they want. ;)

do plebes usually have “open” periods? and how does the class schedule work? do they have the same classes every day, or do they rotate daily? can they receive E.I. during these open periods?

Yes, you can get EI during those periods if the professor is available.

As to how often Mids have free periods depends on the course load. Everyone has a few here and there. Unless things have changed, classes are scheduled such that the weekly schedule is the same. In other words, all Mondays are the same, all Tuesdays are the same, etc.

Generally, at least two of the five days will be the same, and the others will have differences such as PT or labs and such. But there are no guarantees.

The true answer is that it depends on the company.

A lot of companies ban plebes the use of instant messaging services at first (my company’s plebes cannot use IM’s still). If you are caught there is usually consequences for you and the rest of your classmates in your company.

In my company, morning inspections are frequent, which means not being able to run in the morning…0530 is the earliest time out of the rack and 0600 are the inspections (earliest time plebes can be required to do things).

I wouldn’t say you have much time to sit in the chair because you are either doing school work, learning rates, studying pro-knowledge, helping others, etc.

The only time for relaxation is the weekends. No media is allowed during the week, nor cell phones during study hour. TV and music is not allowed without permission.

They have an “earliest out of the rack” time now, eh?

Sneaky bastages!

Yes, zaph!

Correction…0530 is the earliest out of rack time for plebes…so technically, something can be scheduled for 0545

Free time and plebes…doesn’t happen! If your plebe says they have free time, worry!!!

In my day (now the Dark Ages, of course), I found that Sunday mornings were the best time for relaxing. You could sleep in (until 7 or 7:30 during plebe summer and, as I recall, until noon formation during the ac year). Because of the various church services and different times for each, there were no meetings scheduled until after noon. Thus, you could read, workout, study rates, clean room, whatever you wanted (no music or TV, of course – and we didn’t have computers or cell phones in those days). And, for those so inclined, church services were very relaxing (seriously).

During plebe summer, Mon-Sat. were nonstop. During ac year, you did have a handful of free periods (there are a few more now b/c plebes take a slightly lighter course load which, I for one, think is good). However, you tend to (need to) use those for running errands – picking up and dropping off uniforms to be pressed, buying supplies in the Midstore, getting haircuts, studying rates, delivering and folding laundry, doing spirit actitivies (decorating Bancroft, etc.), cleaning your room for inspection, getting extra instruction – you get the idea.

WEs during ac year are also more relaxed. You can go to your sponsor’s or parents’ home and really relax. You can go out on liberty into town. Or, again, you can stay on the Yard and relax – upper class didn’t seem to spend too much WE time worrying about the plebes. However, this is all contingent on your being in satisfactory shape academically, PT-wise and conduct wise.

We need to start being honest with these Plebers-to-be.

The fact is, Plebers are hung from their thumbs in the basement of Bancroft during the weekends and during free periods. ;)

They’ll find out soon enough. <evil grin=“”></evil>

LOL. Indeed!

BWAAAAHAHAHAHAHA!!! :D

You both were the last classes to have a real Plebe Summer, right?

No. Mine was. ;)

I am just curious… can someone give me a rundown of what the plebe’s do in Plebe Summer. All I have heard about is being yelled out! Certainly If someone could give me an idea of what the average day is like and what all they do and have accomplished by the end of Plebe Summer I would greatly appreciate it.

plebe summer leaves very little free time- like “zero” comes to mind- they barely make it back into their racks at the end of the day…

the academic year can give them a bit more time, depending on course load, course requirements, etc, followed by company demands /rules/regs…

some days there is not a moment to be had anywhere- and others where you might find some quiet time- usually study hours are respected, but even that is dependent on roomates, friends, family, etc… and how much they respect that time.

What you will find is that the mids fall very quickly into a routine of their own, and learn to manage their time very, very quickly- once they are allowed to manage it, that is… it’s all a question of balance, and finding the right balance is easy for some, more challenging for others.

Weekends bring some free time, then again depending on how well you have kept up with stuff from the previous week, and for the upcoming one… I know our mid spends a lot of time on sunday studing professional knowledge that gets tested each sunday evening.

As for getting up-- hmmm— he had to get up at 4:30am last week for an AI… said they stood in the hall for 2 hours… will have to ask him what time it actually started… again, company dependent.

As for hanging plebes from their thumbs in the basement of Bancroft during the weekends and during free periods…nah, they stopped this- called it harrassment… now they just yell and yell and yell and yell… which is the only time those plebe BCG glasses come in handy- at least they stop the mouth spray from getting in one’s eye!

Mine referred to Plebe Summer as: Summer Camp with Guns, Summer Camp on hormones, Camp Tecumseh, Summer of the Hate Machine so you get the picture the good, the bad and the ugly.

Lets see for the good: learned to sail, learned to shoot a rifle and a pistol and had a lot of fun doing so. Wall climbed, obstacle courses, Tarzan courses, damage control, sailed to Baltimore, Went to an Orioles Game, Went to Washington DC, and made incredible friends. Took validation tests, met with academic advisors……

Marched, got yelled at, worked hard, make it through the day one day at a time, memorized everything and anything, only time in life where you really do let someone else do your thinking, just do what you are told and find you own small victories even when someone else is pointing out how you failed. Figured if the whole college thing didn’t work out he developed the skills to make one mighty fine janitor…you need to have a sense of humor more than you ever thought…

Start at the very beginning of USNA2010 – July 4th and you can follow the class of 2010 through the rest of plebe summer. The two women were incredible and gave family and friends a glimpse of the “good” life.

Maybe a Mid who posts will chime in but then again maybe not…they may not want to give away the “club” secrets.

OK… I couldnt get past the Halloween Pics!
This guy in particular. Oh for a West Pointer to see that one! Very funny!

OH WOW! Those pics are awesome! I love all the comments from the parents in July seeing their child for the first time.Very sweet. Is this something they do every year?

Glasses questions… as early as the July 2 pics I see several diff styles of Glasses. The big ugly ones, smaller one and even wire rims? Whats the story on BCG’s … are there a variety to choose from?
