I hear that Chicago accepts a proportionally larger percentage of people with 1540 or above SAT scores (CR+math) than do other schools? Is this true, and just how much does Chicago care about test scores?

If it is true you should be able to tell from the available data–just about every school releases info about SAT scores (although it isn’t clear what comparison schools you were thinking they might be proportionally higher than).

On the other hand, I don’t think you can really answer the question “How much attention does (any school) pay to SAT scores?” That’s the nature of the holistic process. One school might emphasize academics and standardized testing a little more in their admissions practices, but that’s about as much as there is to know. Check the common data set.

Chicago’s reputation is that it goes well beyond test scores and puts special emphasis on the essays. Last year, my son got wait listed with a 2130 (1400 - CR + M). On the other hand, the average SAT scores of UC students is quite high and the gap between median scores (25 to 75) does not appear to be wider than other, comparable schools.

One thing that may be different about Chicago from other top schools (even the Ivy league) is that Chicago places less emphasis on recruiting athletes and so its 25% median may reflect at least some unhooked students.

If you have read a college admissions guide book called "Fiske Guide “, you should know " SAT/ACT is NOT as important as applicants think, but is MORE important than colleges would admit”.
2250 to 2300 should be a safe range, the higher the better.

Also, does Uchicago pay attention to the writing score at all?

They do not.

It is a balance between SAT and others, such as GPA, recommendations,
etc.
