How much can community service help?

My sister is a junior and is currently sitting at 2500 service hours, and will have around 3500 by the time she applies (if she chooses to continue). She’s been wondering if she should continue, or if it’s better to pursue some other activity. She really enjoys volunteering and has two leadership positions out of three volunteer roles. Her biggest one is teaching bio classes to children & teens at a homeless shelter, where she’s taught about 500 so far and has helped many (about 150?) graduate high school (most are the first in their families) or middle school as a result. Should she continue spending a lot of time (over 20 hrs each week) volunteering, or does it not help her apps that much?

This might be the most important part of your post.

I have two main thoughts on ECs. The first is that academics is more important for university admissions. The second is that for ECs a student should do what is right for them. Whatever you do, do it well.

If your EC helps other people, this is even better.

This sounds like a very good EC to me.

Her contributions sound wonderful! Since she enjoys it and it seems a worthwhile cause, I’d encourage her to continue unless her calendar is overcrowded or she prefers to do something else. It does seem like a big time commitment - if it is too much, maybe should could cut back on the hours a bit.

I agree with the above posters.

That said, I’m closing the thread. If your sister wants additional feedback, she is welcome to create her own account to post. For numerous reasons, not least of which is privacy, we generally only allow such questions to be asked by the user or their parent/ guardian

If she really enjoys this volunteer work, she should continue. It shows dedication.
