I am currently a rising sophomore and recently took a practice SAT courtesy of College Board’s website. My overall score was 2090 (770 W, 750 R, 570 M), but I would like to by my junior year have at least a 2300. I have not taken Geometry or Algebra II since I was an awful student in middle school and went from accelerated to remedial math in just a year. I decided to apply myself as a freshman and finished with a 4.0 GPA, so this year I am taking accelerated Geometry and accelerated Algebra II. I assume these classes help tremendously with the math portion of the SAT, but would they be enough to boost my math score to a 750+?

It depends on if you retain the information and if you’re naturally good at math. But yeah the classes will help you get started a lot and from there you just have to study to get that score… Idk why but during my junior year I took pre calc and after taking it, I understood so much more than I did in the summer of soph year. Probably because it included algebra and made me a more critical thinker.

Believe it or not, the SAT Math section is one of the easiest to boost since your score just shows that you’re lacking some conceptual knowledge. Honestly, the SAT math section does not test on advanced Geometry or Algebra II concepts, so you could improve your score significantly just by going through some prep books and lessons. For some conceptual help, I would recommend Khan Academy since it includes both practice problems as well as helpful videos. Also, just work through some Blue Book untimed math tests. Whenever you come across a problem you don’t know, look up the concept and learn it; then try to answer the question. Once you get your accuracy up, you could focus on timing (which isn’t too bad, with practice).

Unfortunately, the SAT Math section also has the toughest curve, so you’ll definitely need to aim for an 800 in order to reach your goal score of 750+ because more than 2 wrong and you’re out of this range. However, since you are a rising sophomore, you still have plenty of time to prepare, and you will likely improve your score significantly.

Congrats on those CR and Writing scores though! Those are already great scores for juniors/seniors, but the fact that you’re in that range as a freshman is simply remarkable. Good Luck! :)

I’d suggest the PWN the SAT or SAT Quantum websites or the PWN Math Guide instead of the Khan Academy.

Math is all about practice. Learn a concept and drill it over and over again.

What grade are you in now? Because if you’re going to end up taking the test in 2016, you’ll have to prepare your english sections differently. Math will be relatively the same, though, so practice practice practice!!

I will be a sophomore this fall, so I should be able to choose which SAT I want to take. I’m think though that the new SAT is going to resemble the ACT, which I dread. I just can’t work fast enough on the reading and science sections. I’m fairly certain that the current SAT is the test for me.
