How much can my EC's help me?

I have done a lot of volunteer work (whether they be in a hospital, in school, or in my loca library).

My worry is that my GPA is too low and will hold me back (85.9 UW and 89 Weighted)

My SAT’s are in the range

CR- 550

Writing- 650

Math- 630

and my ACT Is good: 28

I need my Volunteer work/alumni relation/ other little things to help me get in.

I have always wanted to go to this school ever since I found out thats where my parents went.

They want me to get in but I am really worried.

Do you think my other EC’s and good ACT, fairly good SAT can pull me through?

Also

Do schools look at both UW and weighted? because I thought that they did but they give more focus to UW.

you are in range even though your average is not. The applicant pool isn’t out yet but your EC’s can pull your average through- but there are no guarantees
Mid 50%
87-94 %
1150-1300

so what youre saying is that I still have a decent shot?

because Stony is my dream school

Dear Ak,

Your test scores look good, your average might be a little low, but that isn’t everything. EC’s will bring make your app look a ton better. No matter what anyone says they help. Think about it this way. Ivy league schools get apps from everyone with a 4.0 gpa. They can pick anyone. So the EC’s are what makes them accept students, not their grades. They reject more 4.0’s then they accept, and that’s a fact.

Yes Stony Brook is not an Ivy, yet, but we are still a great school. We get tons of apps from strong graded students, but grades are not everything.

Sports, clubs, school achievements, national honor society, community service, etc, they all look amazing on your transcript. Do as much as you can, it all loooks good.

thank you. that makes me feel somewhat better.

I have another question:

If you had to choose: would you choose a person with a 550 crit, 630 math, and 28 ACT but has an 85.9 UW avg due to taking a few AP Classes and struggling somewhat.

OR

a person with a 93 UW with all regents classes and a 1500-1600 SAT?

Hey man, your GPA is not UNDER their requirements!
Yesterday, they had an admissions chat room on Stony Brooks Website. They said that you need to have an 85+ and an 1150+ - and you have both. An ACT of 28 is better than your SAT so you seem to be good. All you have to do now is wait!

IT depends on both people.

IF the person with the 93 is taking just normal level courses compared to yourself taking Ap courses, you will be chosen. They look at the course load as well. Would you rather take someone with 5 regular or 5 ap classes? The higher the level of class, the better it looks, grades don’t really matter, B with ap, or A with non ap, the ap will look better. I mean if you fail the ap class then it will look bad yes, but if you do decent work then it will look better. It all depends on the grades.

Also, as I said, EC’s are a lot as well. EVERY college looks for students that “stick out.”

Compare these 2 examples:

“Hi my name is Sam, all I did in High School was take normal level courses, and I have a 4.0. I never did any extra’s, just devoted my time all to studying.”

OR

"Hi, my name is Rob, what I did in High School was take ap and honor level courses, I was the captain of my Basketball, Football, and Baseball teams. I was all American In Football, and Baseball. I did volunteer work at the soup kitchen, the fire department, and at my church. I was part of National Honor Society, and was a scholar athlete 4 years in a row.

Compare them, it’s not that hard for colleges to tell the differences. The hard this is when there is someone with 10 forms of EC with a 90, or someone with 11 forms of EC, with a 87.

RBASU!!! Is that true!!! if that is then I would be so relieved!!!

who said that? I know that there was a online chat on tues but I didnt bother because I thought it was just going to be students answering questions.

Was it an actual guidance counselor? or an admissions person?

you just brightened by day Rbasu!

There was a lobby with students and there was a lobby with admissions people so yes i did speak to admissions people!
