How much damage does this do?

I got an F in a half unit of Spanish I. It was an online-course and there was some level of inconsistency between my online instructor and the district policy. My instructor almost guaranteed that it wouldn’t show up as an F but as a WF, but unfortunately it did under district policy. This isn’t even the whole Spanish I course, but just half. Every course in my district is divided into two parts, so that credit can be awarded on a quarter basis. However, this does still show up on my transcript. I retook the whole Spanish I course and got a 98% on it and took Spanish II as well and got all As. Does this, along with my 3.7 GPA, absolutely kill my chances for ivies and other top-tier schools?

P.S. My major is engineering

I doubt the F will kill you, particularly since it didn’t happen in a core academic course. Most admissions offices will probably see that your other grades are good and assume that something outside your control happened. I would talk to your guidance counselor; maybe he or she will explain in the rec.

The retaken with 98% will probably completely negate its effect. The 3.7 isn’t great, but completely forgivable if you have a good rank or if it comes from this one F.
