How much difference .1 makes

so I have a 3.7 gpa and 33 act… and ppl tell me northwestern is a reach even with ED. .
and I see other ppl’s stat with 3.8 and lower act or sat equivalent(+similar EC). And ppl say brown and northwestern are “matches” for them

wth… why do people look down so much on little bit lower gpa. (oh man this kid has .1 lower than the other kid that has a lower act score. he must be ■■■■■■■■. he doesn’t deserve to go to a four year school.)
Is .1 something I can’t make up with a higher ACT score?

The schools you apply to will try to evaluate your 3.7 in context of how much grade inflation your school has and how tough a curriculum you chose. If you’re coming from a mediocre school where you’ve taken easy classes, a 3.7 isn’t impressive. But since you have a 33 ACT I’m guessing that’s not the case, and you ought to have a good shot at Northwestern.
Brown is tricky because even though your ACT is good for them, they’re unpredictable. They seem to prefer athletes, legacies, minorities, and celebrities.

greennblue thx for your post. I go to a semi-competitive high school. It used to be ranked 100th in nation. But it went down recently. (9th or 10th in illinois) And I have taken the toughest courses possible and I came to US in 2001. I hope that helped you see who i am a little bit more clearly.

Also, the same kids may not be answering both threads. Brown is not a match for anyone.
