How much do elite colleges care about All State Orchestra for non music majors?

I was not eligible to audition but am a strong musician in my state. I’m bummed I can’t put it on my applications… but I have heard from music majors and schools that all-state doesn’t matter at all. Is the same true for general applicants to general schools in the top 20?

Don’t understand why you think you cannot put it on your app. The Common App section on activities has space to describe any accomplishments and recognition. Being All State certainly boosts the EC, more so if you come from a populous state and if you are further honored as a top chair.

It isn’t a big deal to top colleges. A solid EC accomplishment, but won’t make or break an application.

I was not eligible to audition because I didn’t take school orchestra since it’s easy too easy for my level of play.

You can add any and all ECs, they don’t have to be just through the school. If you are a musician, you should add it to your application - and include any awards you have received. It WILL make a difference.

If you want to play in college, you can reach out to the program director. They may not have any pull with admissions , but you never know.

But this is an EC and award(s) that help show who you are, so get it on your app! It could help.

Prepare an application that highlights the things you have accomplished and don’t stress about the things you haven’t done.

On its own it probably doesn’t make (or break) an application. But taken holistically with the rest of your application it holds some meaning. If one of your ‘spikes’ you are presenting to colleges is music, All State both supports and fills out this part of your application. I’d recommend you fill out this spike with a few state level competitions to further flesh it out. That being said this is only for the music ‘spike’. Unless you are going to be a music major, you will need to have other supporting ECs…science, sports, volunteering whatever. Remember the entire application is one thing…pitching a believable story. If the only thing you have supporting a music story is participation in the high school band + some random competition wins…it’s valuable space you wasted that you could have spent supporting another pitch.
