so the theatre director at one of the schools i’m applying to (i am an actor if this isnt already obvious) reached out to me today about the school’s theatre department, even though the application deadline was jan15 as we all probably figured

Hopefully you spoke to or wrote the theater director back and learned even more about the school’s program and thanked them for their time. I don’t think you can read into it beyond manners - but I do think it was nice of this teacher to reach out to you and bodes well about their engagement with the arts. This was a great opportunity for you to reiterate your interest in the school and program.
The deadline for your app was the 15th with schools getting ready to go into committee, so not odd timing at all,imo.
It’s an opportunity to learn more about the program and connect. I’d think of it as a 2 way street – they school wants you to know about their program, and this is a chance to “sell” you.
But it’s also a chance for you to show your interest and sell them on you.
I’d thank them for reaching out and ask some questions – i.e., who is eligible to audition (do you have to have taken a class), can you try out for every show, when are rehearsals, etc.
Remember that sometimes, your interest may be noted through your application and/or the teacher who is reaching out was really busy (with a show?!) earlier.
In any case, use this opportunity!
In your case, I think that this is an indication that the school wants you based on the content of your chance me thread. 11 years of acting lessons, 9 years of vocal training, solid qualifications, and not applying to ultra-selective boarding schools.
My best guess is that you should be receiving good news from more than one school.
