How much do people usually get via FAFSA?

I was cited my family contribution to be between 10,000 and 20,000 (I won’t disclose exact figure)

How do I stand?

FAFSA is meaningless alone. FAFSA doesn’t get you anything. What the FAFSA does is tell the colleges what your family can be expected to contribute toward your education according to a federal formula.

You are looking at having 10,000-20,000 to pay out of pocket. At a school which meets 100% need and costs $40,000, you can expect to get $20,000-30,000 in aid, in a package comprised of grants, loans and self-help (work study). At a school which does not meet 100% of need and costs $40,000, you can expect to be requested to pay $20,000-$40,000 of the cost of attendance.

In short: knowing what the FAFSA says isn’t going to tell you what you’re going to be expected to pay. Only the colleges can tell you that. And it’s going to be hard to guess what they’ll tell you, because sometimes they ask for supplemental information, sometimes they meet 100% of need, sometimes they preferentially package strong students, etc.

Way too many variables to give an answer.
