what do you think?
is it really that important?

mine wasn’t fantastic. the question was like patience is the best form of kindness. agree or disagree and why? I bet it wasn’t very good.

It gives them a chance to see how you think on your feet.

i bombed mine too.

Ditto. tenchar

I’ve heard that they care quite a lot about the SSAT essay. After all, it’s the only piece of writing they see from an applicant where they can be absolutely sure that the applicant had no help whatsoever. In fact, I’ve heard that some schools may even use it to test whether the other essays were actually written by the applicant - by comparing writing style, etc etc.

Mine was pretty bad but it was in my writing style so it won’t raise doubts about my essays.

My essay wasn’t the best. The question was,
The end justifies the means. Do you agree or disagree with this saying?

I think it’s fairly important. It shows a reliable glimpse of your mind while they can’t be one hundred percent sure that the rest of your essays were self-written.

The admissions officers use it is a comparison to see your “real” writing. The essays you turn in with your application are far more important, I think.

I bombed mine. Mine was “Something can be beautiful and ugly at the same time.” Do you agree or disagree with this statement?

I ended up talking about Jesus dying on the cross. My essay didn’t even make any sense - I was like “Jesus dying was ugly because having our savior die kind of sucks and from what I’ve read it was sort of gross the way he died but it’s good because he died for us so now we don’t have to die which is good but it still sort of sucks that he died because he was a pretty cool guy and all that so yeah.” I swear, the school I’m applying to must think I’m a creepy fanatical religious person - I mentioned it in my interview, one of my recommendations was my bible study teacher, I wrote my essay about it… I’m not really CRAZY religious, but it is a part of my life… I think I might have misrepresented myself in that way. Oh well, I guess it might show dedication or something like that…

But if I was an admissions officer (which I’m not - haha), I would focus mainly on the ideas represented in the essay and less on the spelling/grammatical parts - I would look for kids who can come up with thought-provoking arguments and ideas on the fly. I can teach them how to spell and use proper grammar, but I can’t teach someone creativity.

Mine was “it is difficult to transform thought into action”.

I wrote about how children who are bullied want to tell on their bullies, but they can’t because they fear the bully will get revenge.

Sad, isn’t it?

Mine was something like “people prefer to be praised than corrected”. Can’t remember what I wrote except I stared at my blank piece of paper for the first 10 minutes internally swearing,.

They use the SSAT essay to see how well your improvised writing; they probably don’t grade it too harshly compared to your essay. Mine was “violence is the last resort of the incompetent”. I think I did pretty well on it and I even used some real examples from history.

wow. mine was “it is better to be in a alone than in bad company”. mine is so embarrasing, im not gonna even talk about it.

i had the same one one schoolgirlieusa,
in my perspective i think it would be an important part just because-

a) its all your own writing without any help (essays can have plenty of help)
b) you have 20 something minutes to think of what your going to write to respond, so basically testing your ability to think on your feet

In “The end justifies the means,” part of what I wrote was like how people fought in the revolutionary war, fighting’s wrong, but in the end, it’s right… Gahh, I don’t think I even understand the prompt!

what did you write about?

i was aiming that question to Gabbiwoz.

Mine was a horrible failure…ugh they will think I cheated on my other essays (which I didn’t!!!), it was so bad

it was about how nothing is perfect or something like that

ooooo lemme think, i think i wrote about how alone is better because i dont work well in an environment with people that dont care, dont work, etc. Thats the most i can remember
