How Much Do You Save With Costco Per Year?

I’m not a member of Costco, but Friday morning I was passing by a Costco and there was a long line just to get into the Costco parking lot. No thanks.

For many years I have bought Kirkland dried cherries at Costco. For about a half dozen times I was there within the last few months - no cherries, and none on their website either. I then bought Kirkland cherries on Amazon, along with hundreds of other people, according to the Amazon listing. Now there is a different brand on the Costco website, and the price on Amazon is higher than when I bought them.

Sometimes you just find the most amazing things at Costco (this feels like stealing Seattle’s birthright, especially at this price):

What am I missing here? Is it a special salmon???

I’m not the OP, but I was just looking at the sale flyer yesterday for Fresh Market where we typically get our non-local fish. They had Wild Copper River sockeye salmon on sale for $27.99/lb, a whopping $2 off per pound. So yeah, $16.99/lb is an amazing deal compared to what it currently sells for here in Maryland!

And it is the same price as at our
Costco here in the PNW! $16.99

Yes, Copper River salmon is a darker color and supposedly oilier and tastier. Personally I’ve never done a taste test.

I tend to buy any “Alaska” salmon, and avoid farm raised salmon.

We always treat ourselves when Costco has Copper River salmon–usually appears in June for maybe two weeks at best. It is expensive…but REALLY tasty!

We have gotten sock eye salmon at Aldi. They don’t always have it, but when they do, we buy it.

The sockeye salmon discussion touches on a key limitation with Costco. While Costco prices are usually competitive on the products they sell, they often do not sell the less expensive versions of products.

For example, I usually buy frozen wild caught pink salmon. All major grocers in my area sell this except Costco – Albertson/Pavilions/Safeway/Vons, Aldi, Food 4 Less/Kroger/Ralphs, Smart & Final, Target, Walmart, etc. The discount grocers have a normal sticker price of approximately $5/lb. The others drop to $5/lb during good sales. I typically buy at $3 to $4/lb by stacking discounts. Costco’s closest options are as follows. I don’t doubt that Costco has good prices on farm-raised Atlantic and wild Alaskan sockeye, but it’s still more than double the price I pay for salmon since Costco doesn’t sell the less expensive version I buy.

  • Wild Caught Pink Salmon at everywhere except Costco – $5/lb
  • Costco Farm Raised Atlantic – $10/lb frozen ($11/lb fresh)
  • Costco Wild Alaskan Sockeye – $13/lb frozen ($19/lb fresh, smoked)

I’ve never actually tried sockeye salmon, so perhaps I don’t know what I’m missing. Perhaps I’ll try it on my upcoming Aldi order. Instacart offered me a 50% off meats coupon, if I spend $30+ on meats in a single order, which I plan to use at Aldi rather than Costco. Aldi has fresh sockeye salmon at $13/lb on Instacart. It’s probably $12/lb in store – less than Costco.

I saw that and immediately thought, “Extra Magic Hours”, lol.

Was about to post the same thing about the perks. I was quite sure they used to do this in the past for either an executive membership or business membership

How about some extra magic hours at the end of the day, too!

I remember they used to do that too, but it disappeared by the time it would matter to me (retirement, otherwise I’d be at work anyway).

Another perk the email mention was possible discounts on pet insurance (outside vendor) - has anyone signed up for pet insurance via Costco?

I was just recently thinking about cancelling our pet insurance.

I just got a mailing for Costco Digital memberships. One was $20, and one $40…with auto renewal. That auto renewal I need to check. I might not want it renewed at a new price.

It’s easy enough to uncheck auto renewal after you have successfully become a member.

I see these types of offers for discounted membership regularly. The best deals make the membership essentially free after costco shop cards and other promos. The catch is only persons who have not been a member for a some number of months (may be as much as 18 months) are eligible for the discounted rate.
