Move an inherited IRA to Fidelity (and undoubtedly others) and they handle it all, including calculating and distributing the MRD on a date of your choice.
The one MrArabrab inherited has an MRD that would pay for one night at a moderately good hotel. We’ll still take it.
We have IRAs at both Schwab and also Fidelity. We have had absolutely no problems with RMDs and paperwork for taxes.
We only had hassles with Wells Fargo, in fact so much trouble that we had them cash it out and just distribute everything because they kept threatening to give it to state of CA! That was really an issue with that particular institution and not the IRAs.
My, what a prolific group. Love it! Maybe we are all just procrastinating on taxes? (We actually started ours, but had to stop due to missing statemens - phew.)
Per the comment on frequent flier miles, we’ve done well with United. Over the years we’ have paid annual fee. But combining household etc bills and DH’s business miles we’ve had some nice travel A RT ticket for FL spacecamp for DD, I think another RT US trip I can’t recall, 2 RT to Spain (which allowed us to splurge on the Western Med cruise we liked), a RT trip to Japan for me accompanying DH on a business trips, and 4 RT to Europe for a post-graduation family trip last year (that one I think had $500 fee total, but not bad for 4 tickets into Rome / return from Munich). We have more mile now, but saving for another Europe trip.
^^Nice use of miles, @Colorado_mom! You guys have really gotten good usage out of them.

Wait, what? Taxes? It’s only February. I don’t start until September. Yikes, don’t get me stressed out already!!
LOL @busdriver11. We usually like to get them done in February. But we have are taking a vacation first week of March and want them out of the way before that. But no FAFSA - love that !!
The Madoff show was interesting, especially the part that showed he started the Ponzi activity early in his career. It’s not that he had started out trying to do it right and couldn’t keep up. He really just saw other people’s money as his, and had no problem stealing it from them with a warm smile and a hug. A good reason to make sure whatever adviser you have keeps your money deposited with a reputable firm. We can quibble about fees (and I do), but I’m pretty sure when my FIL gets statements from Wells Fargo that his money is really still there.
Can’t do taxes yet either. We’re still waiting on our Vanguard tax forms, and one 1099 for FIL. FIL is likely to get a small federal and large state refund, so we’ll file as soon as possible. We’ll owe a bunch of money on the federal return, but I like to get it done as soon as possible so I can budget.
Taxes! Need brokerage statements yet. I need to do our Federal taxes before I can do our one remaining dependent’s taxes because she has to pay at our rate, and need to do her Fed taxes before I can do her CA and MD taxes, which I need to do before I can do her PA taxes! Can’t wait till she graduates and starts working in one state.
@MomofJandL , have you looked online for your Vanguard tax forms? Mine are all there now (the Foreign Tax Paid was the straggler). We are still waiting for one W2 for us and one for DS.
I admire all you organized people who are actually starting on your taxes already. You’re probably the type who have fixed the hems in all of your pants, and rips in your shirts, instead of just having them sit in that pile in the closet…for years.
@IxnayBob Something about the difference between mutual fund accounts and brokerage accounts maybe, but the web site still shows no tax forms for 2015.
DD said she was the only one in her office that got excited when the W-2s came out - this is her first half year of full time work after graduation, and she’ll get a nice refund, so she wanted to file as soon as possible. Yep, she gets that from me. Another thing she gets from me is she’s checking the brackets to make sure she isn’t having too much withheld, because she doesn’t want to overpay and get big refunds after this year.
We’ll have a care team conference at the SNF tomorrow with FIL. I think the result is going to be that he’s gotten as much as they can give him from PT, and has to transition from Medicare paid temporary status to long term self-pay. I’m glad he won’t really ever see the bills, it would break his heart to see the monthly fees. Actually, it would more likely infuriate him. Either way, he did us the favor of saving enough that we can make sure he’s in the place with the best care and not have to make the decision based on who takes Medicaid.
Sounds like the IRS is having some computer glitches which are affecting online filings. I guess it doesn’t always pay to be the early bird.
Weren’t there some issues with online filing last year as well?
@MomofJandL How fortunate your FIL is to have you help manage his care. It’s way too complicated, especially at a time when those needing the care can’t best navigate it.
I was expecting a refund from the IRS. I didn’t receive it so I called the IRS today. I was told they don’t have my amended return.
I said I sent the return certified mail, return receipt. I got back the return receipt. Stamped.
I was told, “Don’t have any record of your return”.
So…my cpa is going to handle it. What a marvelous day! First time I have ever had this kind of problem with the IRS. I kind of need the IRS to find the return.
On a positive note, my wife just received two free tickets, $147 value each, to go the Flipping Formula, an Exclusive Live Real Estate Event.
And I know the real estate event is exclusive because my wife got the invitation and I didn’t.
Last year we had IRS trouble when our son had to file a return for the first time (but still was listed as a dependent on ours). I helped him fill out his very minimalist return and we sent it before our joint return was submitted by our accountant. Our electronic return was bounced back with some inexplicable problem related to our son’s dependent status, and I know our accountant thought the fault must have been with our doing our son’s return without his help. But when he looked over a copy of our son’s return he found no errors, and the IRS mistake was never really explained, just eventually corrected after some phone calls by our accountant. So I am bracing myself for a repeat of IRS problems this year. But at least our accountant no longer thinks DS and I are incompetent.
@busdriver11 - Actually no, I am terrible on fixing hems (and actually anything related to mending, housework etc). I can ignore that because it’s no big deal whether it gets done or not. Taxes on are a different matter, and I am always relieved to have them DONE. We didn’t used to do them this early, but we had some FAFSA years that got us in gear early - felt good.
