How much does being featured on TV help your chances at good colleges?
just wondering…

errr, it depends on what you were featured for… convicted felon, no. founder of some charity, yes. star on some TV show, probably.

O.o

like for academics… what do you think

Ummmm, is this a real question? Every local TV station features kids doing nice things. When I was in Maine recently every night the local news had kids who were the val of a local school being interviewed.

Now if Barbara Walters interviewed you for a special on achievement in our Country, it would be worth sending the tape.

who’s talking about sending in a tape… talking about the honors and achievement category… and no it wasn’t local, smarty

It certainly will not hurt your chances with good colleges, but perhaps you will need to go into some details why you were interviewed. I have had some students speak to state government boards – no media coverage, but still, to represent the school at the state level is impressive.

Honestly, if you did something that was honorable or had a large achievement you should just list THAT on your app, rather than listing that you were on TV.

Your question warranted the answer I gave, but let me be more straight forward. Unless it was meaningful press that shows you are truly exceptional and have an unusual achievement, mentioning it will make you sound like a tool and other things that rhyme with it.

yea… I guess what you’re saying is right smart. cookie, but I mean come on, being interviewed by TV fills the 4 spaces of most important honors or awards better than something like a 3rd place at a some regional competition

well the thing is, the tv features were more than just once

I honestly don’t think that listing all these TV features is going to help you a bunch. If what you did was amazing, list it under awards and incorporate it into your essays, and if you do an interview with the college, then talk about it.

yea… I know it’s not gonna help that much, but it surely can’t hurt

I’m not applying to top top schools

^ Very true. If you feel it defines who you are, or it represents a big achievement in your life, work it into your app, and maybe even write an essay about how the experience shaped you as a person.

smart.cookie, I must say you are very eloquent and a good advisor, and not like some other people on here that dash to say the sarcastically smartest thing off the top of their head

Thanks ![]()
I do my best…
On an unrelated note, congrats on the TV feature! How was the experience?

Why post when you seem to want to answer the question yourself?

But I agree about smart cookie, eloquent indeed you little devil:)

kind of nervous at first, but then it was just like talking to someone off the street…it’s amazing how they like direct you and tell you what shots they want and all that… they get some beastily angles on different shots

It really all depends on what you were featured for. You still need the necessary grades and testing scores still.

yes… rararachit, you bring up a good point… so I really don’t like it when people get this one award or whatever, and they’re suddenly “ivy material”, or so they think
