How much does being Hispanic, first-gen, and low-income matter in college acceptance decisions?

I have pretty good grades too (~3.8 GPA) and my EC are pretty decent. My SAT score is 1890 though but W&M accepts the January SAT. I’m applyed to W&M and UVa. I’ll also be applying to Virginia Tech, JMU, GMU and CNU.

If you are applying to an engineering program, then the fact that you are Hispanic will be a huge plus.

@umcoe16 I was thinking more along the lines of doing a biology/bioscience program. I’m in AP Calc BC right now in my senior year and I got an A the first quarter. I’ve only taken regular physics last year but I managed to get an A in that too. My AP Bio grade for the first quarter wasn’t too bad (A-) either.

If the school needs Hispanic applicants, then your chances are good. Your SAT score puts you at a bit of a disadvantage. There’s only so much help the school can give you for admission; your academics are important. Check the NPC for each school and see what your aid might look like.

@“aunt bea” what does NPC mean? Sorry I just recently made an account and I’m not used to all the lingo.

My SAT composite was 1300 (680 Reading + 620 Math) I think that puts me about in the 30th percentile. IIRC W&M 25th percentile is 1260

NPC = Net Price Calculator

Net Price Calculator.
Each university has an NPC. It is financial information that you plug in, from your family’s finances, and it calculates, more or less what you can expect to pay to go to that school.

This is the link to the NPC for Vtech: http://www.apps.finaid.vt.edu/apps/NPC/npcalc.htm
JMU’s: http://www.jmu.edu/financialaid/calculators/undergraduate.shtml

I hope that it helps!

@“aunt bea” ooh okay I understand know. Thank you very much
