How much does being valedictorian of a CC help?

I was fortunate enough to win this great award but if I was planning to transfer to a top 20 school would this make a huge difference or no difference. Thanks

Well the grades you received to earn that title will of course help a lot, although I doubt the award itself would make a huge difference. But it could certainly help.

It helps, sure. But how much is hard to say, Harvard, Yale, etc have a low % of admittance rate for transfer students, something like 1% to 3% for 2012(but it varies year to year) but U of Penn and Duke let in about 10% for the same year. Go ahead and apply to them, but make sure you have a few ‘safeties’ for back up.

I didn’t know there is such thing, I would assume from reading CC that there a lot of 4.0 students, I mean how do they make the distinction in the selection process?

@DrGoogle There actually aren’t as many CC students with 4.0s as you may think. At my community college, there were only 3 out of a graduating class of over a thousand. I also have never heard of them awarding the title of valedictorian though. At my college they gave an award to everyone who got a 4.0.

Post #4, not many from certain CC but probably lots from many community colleges so I think there’s probably no help in admission from just being valedictorian.

No idea what your stats are like, and it’s a reach for anyone, but at least half of the 20 (sometimes more) transfers that Amherst accepts every year [are from community colleges](Transferring from a Community College | Transfer Applicants | Amherst College). The acceptance rate is around 5%, so obviously very low, but they have a demonstrated commitment to community college students which may work in your favor. The financial aid is great, too; according to that link, the average grant given to community college students is 55k/year.

I graduated with a 4.0 with 70 credits in an AA of liberal arts:social sciences. I’m a vol firefighter, was pres of PTK, and was in student gov.
