How much does interviewing help?

I am applying to SCS and I wanted to know how much getting an interview will actually help my admission chance.

“demonstrated interest” is listed as “important” by CMU under their admissions characteristics. So an interview will be good for your application; it won’t get you in if your stats are subpar, but it will definitely help.

The important thing to note is that they’re not really that interested in what you say during your interview - it’s really just a chance to ask questions. The important part is the fact that you are on campus and care enough to be there.

This year, admissions has been talking about implementing a kind of ID system where every time a student visits, stays overnight, interviews, etc, he or she will be able to register with their ID at the event in question and that will then log accumulated “interest” into the system under their name. Consider an interview in that context - it’s just another way to boost your app.

^I’m glad they didn’t do that when my son applied. He did not interview and saw the campus for the first time during accepted students weekend. It wasn’t until then her really realized how much SCS had to offer.

I interviewed during sleeping bag weekend and afterward got a very nice letter from the Director of Admissions about the interview I had with another admissions person-- .

Son showed interest in all 10 of his intended schools (2001-2002), The interviewers had little knowledge of engineering and even in 2001 , most of the questions can be answered online dailup internet. He found the interviews useless in answering his q’s; He mostly got the interviewers to talk.
